You have to use YouTube (desktop) for it to work now. I've tried everything and this is the only way I've been able to listen to anything in the background. The first time I tried however, it didn't work, so....if it doesn't the first time, try until it does.

Youtube doesn't allow you to play music in the background, as it could be used as a free music-streaming program (what im aware of)
- Have you always been able to leave the app, and have music in the background? Sounds completely strange to me.
That was one of the most helpful reply for a frustrating issue-thank you mate.
Guys, opening youtube In " Request desktop site " mode of chrome incognito brings back the feature of YouTube Audio only playback back to life!!!Hurraay!
Oh! Doesn't it work on Safari too? I'm infact listening to an audio right now on YouTube......
After you enable background play on Safari, play a video on YouTube and lock the screen. The lock screen would display the hyperlink/ embedded code of the video and would pause initially. Resume playing then. It takes a while to buffer, but within few seconds it resumes playing. It now displays the proper title of the video and even scrolling works.
You can also try playing from the Control Centre by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
Sorry for being so elaborate. Thought it might help better.
I completely agree. This is so frustrating, and Apple needs to fix this. For as much money as they're charging for an iPhone, I'd expect to be able to listen to podcasts or videos without wasting half my battery on the screen running and not being able to multi-task on my phone. This is ridiculous, and I can't believe it hasn't already been fixed. Apple, please FIX THIS IM ANGRY
before 10.3.2 the story was like this (youtube on safari); open youtube on safari - play a video - lock screen button ( music is gone now) - lock screen button again - then hit the play button on lock screen.
in that case youtube was used be played in backgroung on safari. it's not anymore after 10.3.2.
Dear all
Anyone on iOS 11 beta? Background play anyway doesn't work on YouTube.com on any of the browser apps including safari. Hope the functionality is retained in final version of iOS 11.
Any thoughts/ suggestions?
Thank you
So here's an interesting data point for you all.
I'm running Firefox on Windows 10 and have the User Agent Switcher extension installed. If I tell UAS to pretend that I'm using Safari on iOS and then go to YouTube, the video will stop playing as soon as I switch tabs. If I have UAS tell YouTube I'm on Android, the video will continue playing in the background just fine.
That tells me this has nothing to do with any changes Apple has made. YouTube is intentionally disabling this functionality if you're using iOS. For what purpose, I have no idea.
Doesn't work on iOS9 anymore, either.
It used to with iOS9 & 10.
It DOES still work with sites like archive.org & daily motion :-)
just not YouTube (which was stopped as a deterrent to music streaming)
Yes, you are right. It stopped on iOS 9 the same time as on iOS10. (it was by YouTube to 'prevent' music streaming 'illegally'...
it does still work with videos not playing via YouTube (ie. daily motion, or archive.org, which it what i use now.)
I've also since used the app "TubeX". It continues to play the audio of the video in the background if you exit the app and by swiping up for Control Center then pressing the Play button. Haven't used the original YouTube app since.
Ok I'll try thank you!
You are wrong. It sure why this is marked solved when it's wrong
The update to 10.3.1 does seem to have broken the workaround described in the OP.
BUT, the same trick still works in Firefox for iOS :).
Wrong. You must have not seen or tried it because it did indeed used to allow background playback on Safari and from lock screen. No subscription needed.
Your response is flat out incorrect. You have not and do not need a Red account to play YouTube videos in the background.
youtube doesnt play in the background anymore
