CarPlay doesn't work after iOS 10.3.1 update

I installed iOS 10.3.1 and now CarPlay does not work. There's a brief notification, but it doesn't stay active long enough for me to read it. I think it's something like "Device not found."

I restarted the phone. I restarted the car. I had the phone forget the car to do a new connection. Now the phone and the car can't find each other. It worked perfectly before the update.

Hello ghiarev,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to use CarPlay with your iPhone and your vehicle. Please follow each of these steps in this article to help resolve your issue:

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Set up CarPlay with your iPhone

Cheers!

Similar bugs experienced. I have an iPhone 7 Plus in a 2016 Hyundai Elantra. Carplay functions still but I've noticed a few differences since the update.

  1. Apple Music plays for a few seconds as soon as I start the car and I have to manually press play once again for it to come back, (which never used to be an issue). Also the Play/Pause icon will remain on the pause option, (as if the music were still playing), when this happened and when I clicked it it played again and remained the pause icon as if nothing had happened.
  2. Sidebar recent apps are now displayed all the time (last 3 apps in Car Play used), which I have only ever seen one at a time and VERY few and far between before the update and I never knew what caused them to spontaneously appear or disappear. (My guess was that it appeared only when notifications popped up and took you to a different app when selected, but don't know for sure).
  3. Additionally, as I plug in my iPhone to my Apple-delivered, brand new, certified lightning cable, I have noticed Car Play will automatically pop up and display a blank dark screen yet still play music. This was an issue pre-update and may or may not have changed since the update, (can't recall if it has happened since).
  4. Finally, Apple Music will randomly pause songs while I'm driving. I thought this might've been a result of some loose wiring as I went over bumps but I quickly validated this wasn't the case multiple times as it happened while parked and didn't happen over large speed bumps or other rougher driving that would more than likely cause the glitch to occur if the wiring was an issue.

Anyway, this is my experience, hope the next update comes out soon and addresses these with a fine-tooth comb in the software.

YYes this is typical Apple, no brains in the whole organisation. some ******* changes a setting and has done no R&D. I have a $100k car and car play doesnt work on a BRAND NEW iPhone 7. Yet my sons iPhone 5 works perfectly without a update done.

NEVER EVER UPDATE A IPHONE because some uni student who knows nothing has probably designed the update.

I recently had this same problem connecting to an aftermarket stereo I just installed with my iPhone 7 Plus. I tested Carplay on the new radio after I installed it and was working great. I upgraded to 10.3.1. I thought maybe the mic wasn't connected to the radio or had a cut in the wire. It wasn't until I searched online to see people were having a problem since the upgrade. I tried all the tricks mentioned..turning car off... stereo off...phone off. No luck. I could play music with Carplay just could not do Siri. Tried playing with the Siri settings no luck. By happenstance I changed the voice setting for Siri from Australian women to American Male. Today when I got in my car I tried Hey Siri and it just started working to my surprise. I also have it bluetooth to the stereo as well, where as before I did not. My 2 cents. Good luck.

OK ALL PROBLEM SOLVED.

After doing everything possible including taking my new vehicle back to the dealers i made a fuss at the apple store. it was within their replacement period and decided to replace the phone. the problems are ALL GONE with latest update and all my backups on the phone. my read on the situation is that the firmware update corrupts some phones randomly but is definitely a phone problem.

cheers

Yeh i think Apple are telling little lies with that one. My brand new VW had the problems mentioned in my previous post but my 1 year old Mercedes does not. as mentioned before once i complained enough for apple to replace my iphone for another one my problems all disappeared with the latest update. so there is by no possible way it could have been the vehicle. !!!!!!!!!

Its just Apple people who don't know what they are doing trying to push the blame to someone else. one very simple test get someone else to try their iphone, if it works then its very simple iphone not vehicle

I have this problem as well, with a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado. After the 10.3.1 update, Apple CarPlay is only randomly recognizing my iPhone. Sometimes CarPlay says that no device is connected, but will randomly play a song from my iTunes Library. Every once in a while, CarPlay will recognize my iPhone and work normally. I've been using an Apple Lightning cable and the USB connection that worked like a charm since December.

Apple used to beta-test before general release. I'm beyond frustrated, as CarPlay is one of their best innovations. The customer who can afford a new car with CarPlay is not the kind of customer that Steve Jobs would have treated this way (my wife knew Steve Jobs, so I know what I'm talking about). I have even subscribed to a paid streaming music service for the first time thanks to CarPlay -- and now I can't use it!

After several hours on the phone with apple support this is what we did to make it work properly so I would suggest trying it....go to settings , general, restrictions and turn off! Then on your car setting delete your Bluetooth phone and then add your phone as the "default" phone. This worked for me perfectly . Other wise call Apple support and they will work you through several scenario's as I'm sure every car is different mine was a 2018 Audi but this is what worked for me.
