How do I merge messages from older device without erasing anything from new?

Old iPhone 4 has messages I want to keep. My iPhone 6 is in use by me, and I am not willing to "restore" it if that means losing its newer contents. Tried to print the messages / conversations. Can't seem to do that, either. Can't seem to transfer anything to my Mac. In what sense was I backing anything up, really? Want to merge the info, old with new.

iPhone SE, iOS 10.3.1

If you had backed up the old iPhone 4 first and then restored that backup to the new iPhone 6, you would not have this problem. You cannot merge messages from one device to the other. It doesn't work that way. You can save the messages to your Mac by using one of the third party apps that allow you to do this, but you won't be able to sync them back to the new phone.

Something like this claims to be able to do that.
