Sierra freezes when using App Expose or Show Desktop

There seems to be a common problem with Sierra freezing. In my case this occurs when using App Expose, Show Desktop, or similar window moves.

I am on a MBP mid-2015 running 10.12.4.

I upgraded to Sierra a week ago, this issue has happened THREE times and requires a hard reboot to resolve. This has happened with or without an external monitor being connected. I do not use Logitech drivers nor Logitech peripherals. Sometimes it happens within the same day, sometimes it takes several days.

I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and reinstalled Sierra. I have run EtreCheck and deleted unwanted SW. I do not have the ability to run in safe mode or use another account for several days so don't bother sending me a response with that as a debugging step.

Usually the freeze occurs when I use something like App Expose that causes many windows to move at once. When the freeze happens:

  1. The windows move slightly and then stop.
  2. I can move the mouse but the windows are completely unresponsive.
  3. Clicking on the windows don't change anything, cannot type, cannot move, nothing
  4. If I close the lid and then rewake the computer, the login screen appears but it does not take input (typing does not produce any characters in the password box)
  5. I can ssh into the frozen system from another machine and kill applications; the windows will disappear but nothing resolves
  6. "top -o cpu" from the remote ssh session does not show high CPU usage

The only thing that resolves this freeze is to reboot the machine.

Thank you for assisting and I'm happy it's not happening with your five Macs. There are however several unsolved threads on Sierra freezes each with hundreds of "I have this question too" so I stand by my original comments.

A few additional pieces of information:

  • I tried running in Safe Mode but too many things (sound for example) that were not enabled. Given this issue happens anywhere from four hours to several days Safe Mode isn't viable as I use this laptop for work.
  • When I ran in Safe Mode, it seems the screen would occasionally "refresh" (looks like someone pressed Ctrl-L on an old CRT screen). I don't know if this is normal
  • Chrome also would not display anything but Safari worked; again I do not know if this is normal
  • I also ran Apple Diagnostics and it reported all clear

Jul 10, 2017 9:54 AM in response to tradrat

Found the problem.

This seems to happen when using gestures for App Expose or Show Desktop. I have not checked if this affects using mouse or keyboard buttons for these functions. Also I primarily use an external trackpad and have not noticed whether this occurs with the built in trackpad.

So when using gestures to do App Expose, sometimes the windows will not move fully. So for example if using gestures to do a "Show Desktop", the windows will only move a slight amount and then stop, as opposed to moving fully off the desktop.

When this happens I will be able to move the mouse but clicking and typing does nothing, giving the appearance of a freeze.

The workaround is to repeat the gesture again. This will "unfreeze" the windows and desktop and everything will return to normal.

Latest run. Don't know what to do with the Adobe issues as I run Adobe and don't want to break the installation.

There seems to be a common problem with Sierra freezing.

Not with my five Macs.

I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and reinstalled Sierra. I have run EtreCheck and deleted unwanted SW.

I do not have the ability to run in safe mode or use another account for several days so don't bother sending me a response with that as a debugging step.

You may want to post the EtreCheck report in case there is something installed that could cause a problem you may not be familiar with.

As far as not being able to test in Safe Mode or with a new user account, that rather limits one's options.

At a glance you have quite a bit of out-of-date software installed much of which are unlikely to be compatible with Sierra.

For example…

There are others but I'm not the best typist in the world. I'm sure others will comment.

I would get rid of Sophos myself.

Thanks. I did remove many other items but haven't got around to figuring out the rest.

I'd gladly get rid of Sophos but it's the least intrusive of the AV solutions. Knowing many will say "Macs don't need AV", I will only say that I don't buy that argument and will not be drawn into a discussion about it whether its needed 😉.

Sierra freezes when using App Expose or Show Desktop
