Safari cannot load websites

Hi,

Since last week, Safari cannot load specific websites. In particular, I cannot access any of the papers stored in the journal http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/ Obviously I initially though it would be a problem in the journal's server, but I can access the same websites in other computers, and what is more annoying, from the same Mac but using google Chrome. Therefore, it's really a problem with Safari.

I have tried disabling extensions, cleaning history and empty cache, and the problem persists.

What else can I try?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Using Safari, I have no problem opening the site.

If you have not tried this already, please try it.

1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

Restart the computer and test.

2. Backup the Mac.

Try Google DNS (Domain Name Server) as a test.

Launch System Preferences from the Dock.

System Preferences > Network

User uploaded file

Click the lock at left bottom corner to unlock and authenticate.

Click “Advanced” button at the bottom right corner of the window.

Click the DNS tab.

ISP provided DNS server will be listed in gray.

Take a screenshot of the present setup and keep it as a record.

To add Google DNS servers:

User uploaded file

Google DNS

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

Click the “+” button and enter 8.8.8.8

Click the “+” button again and enter 8.8.4.4

Click OK and then Apply.

If you ever want to remove these DNS servers, just highlight 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

and then press the “-“ button.

How to reverse the change?

1. If the DNS name server is not automatically repopulated,

Add the DNS server manually, from the record you kept.

On this Mac, it is 192.168.1.1

or

2. System Preferences > Network > WiFi > Advanced TCP/IP tab

Click “Renew DHCP Lease”.

Click “OK”.

Click “Apply”

1. Startup in Safe Mode and restart normally by pressing the “Restart” button at the bottom.

Start up in Safe Mode.

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11212?viewlocale=en_US

2. Delete Caches and test.

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" from the dropdown.

Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari

Right click the com.apple.Safari file and select "Move To Trash.

Close windows and relaunch Safari.

3. Delete com.apple.Safari.plist file and test.

Backup your Mac.

Empty the Trash.

Quit all applications.

Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" from the drop down.

Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on it and select "Move it to Trash".

Restart and relaunch Safari. Click “Start using Safari” link at the bottom.

If this doesn’t help, “Put Back” the com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Open”.

Right click on the com.apple.Safari.plist and select “Put Back”.

Choose”Replace”.

4. Sometimes third party software can cause this kind of a problem. Please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

https://etrecheck.com

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open and select ”Open”.

Select a problem from the “Choose a problem” popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard”, and then paste it when you reply.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Additional steps if necessary.

1. Safari > Preferences > Security > Web content:

Make sure all 3 boxes next to Web content are check marked.

Uncheck the box beside “Block pop-up windows” and test.

2. Deselect Proxies, if selected.

System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab

Unlock the lock if you have to.

Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if check marked.

Click "OK" then "Apply”.
