Software for PowerBook G3 400MHz Lombard/Bronze Keyboard

I recently purchased a PowerBook G3 400MHz Lombard / Bronze Keyboard computer. I bought this so I could access and download photos from a very old digital camera I own (Polaroid PDC-2000) which unfortunately only has a SCSI connection.
I'd like to see if I could get some other use out of this laptop other than just downloading photos from an old digital camera. Therefore I'm considering some upgrades and have some questions.

CURRENT CONFIGURATION:

• HD: 45GB [ partitioned with both OS X 10.3.9 Panther and OS 9.2.2 ]

• RAM: 380MB

• 2X DVD-ROM drive (onboard MPEG-2 decoding)

• dual onboard USB 1.1 ports

• SCSI port

• 10/100Base-T Ethernet

+ Belkin 54g Wi-Fi card

+ Firewire 2 Go card

POSSIBLE UPGRADES ( user reports indicate success with the following upgrades ):

+ 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD)

+ 512MG RAM

+ OS X 10.4.11 Tiger ( in addition to OS 9.2.2 )

QUESTIONS (assuming I upgrade as listed above):

1. Which versions of iLife and iWork (if any) will work well on my upgraded PowerBook G3 400MHz Lombard?

2. Which web browser might work best (if any) for surfing the internet?

3. Any other software suggestions that might be a good fit?

4. Where might I buy a new battery for this computer (only place I've found is *bay for $60)?

5. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

While I've read your list of inquires, I've not re-research them recently so don't have

any recent ideas or links to those information topics proven to still exist...

PowerBook G3 PRAM battery (clock) only:

PowerBookMedic.com? G3 parts, battery?

You may have to locate custom battery rebuilder to replace cells inside case.

The iLife question appears to mean your vintage/obsolete PowerBookG3 may be

able to use iLife 04; some features may balk, due to hardware + preference for G4.

iLife: System requirements - Apple Support

An early iWork on DVD media may be hard to get or install. AppleWorks 6.2 was good.

That may be available in earlier version on DVD media; not sure if any updates to older

Mac software are still available from Apple servers. ~ There are several discussions area

users who have older gear, but perhaps they haven't noticed this section for awhile.

You may be able to get an older iTunes player (some audio channels are free, still; as

is the ability to use the Player to control CD recording, if configured) see these links:

iTunes 9.2.1 is available for Mac OS X 10.4.11. iTunes 8.2.1 isn't available for G3 Macs.

My iBook G4 mid-2005 has iTunes 9.2.1 in Tiger. (+ later one for Leopard exists still.)

iWorks may have been available with Tiger. Mine didn't ship with it in 2005 Macs. The

version first out only had two applications. So I didn't use it; and still have AppleWorks.

A good word processor for ancient Macs in pre-X system was MS Word 5.1a. There are

newer ones that do fairly good if you look hard. The links to get them are disappearing.

If you have a full AppleWorks 6.0 you could see if this Apple Support download update

for AW 6.0 will work to update that to AppleWorks 6.2.9; can run in classic MacOS9.2.

If you happen across vintage orphaned old grey-label system install-restore DVDs you

may be able to extract and install some of their better items (examples to test include)

such as AppleWorks -- in various languages, & others; by use of Pacifist utility in OS X.

Rather than toss those into a bin to be lost, you could test old hardware with them.

See charlessoft site to check on what older Pacifist versions still exist. Used to work in

a demo mode, to extract software from compressed media and expand on desktop so

as to install without using the media installers. This requires experimental trial & error.

There isn't much available for the G3 PowerBook 400, you try Classilla browser from

the people behind TenFourFox browser; that sees some maintenance updates...

http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ looking for a web browser for Mac

OS 8.6-9.2.2 (and compatible with 10.1.5-10.3.9)? Try our sister project, Classilla.

Well, I could go on and waste this space; hopefully other users with vintage PB hardware

would see this thread by now. Hopeful some will -- sooner than later.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Seems there was some information posted back in April (2017) = missed.

Also, iLife had no word-processing suite, and so on. There was iPhoto,

iTunes, iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD, and some of the lineup changed.

iLife '04 system requirements

An early word processor what worked good in the day was MS Word5.1a.

Small enough to live on a floppy disc, along with your saved documents.

The history of AppleWorks does not include iLife featured functions. Yet

some of those functions were handed-off to other Apple software in Macs.

TenFourFox has recently released its second FPR build based on later Mozilla

Firefox but this likely will not be translated to Classilla browser. (Ask Cameron.)

A few points are worth reviewing when and if their content has changed, or history revised.

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

There are some places to look into and see if their resource links are active...

LowEndMac has an archive (link to PPC PBk)

http://lowendmac.com/powerbooks.html

[ (WallStreet II), + G3 (Lombard), G3 (Pismo) ]

Everymac.com has some information + specs

PowerBook G3 400 (Bronze KB/Lombard) 400 MHz PowerPC 750 (G3) ~ PBook1.1

PowerBook G3 400 (Firewire/Pismo) 400 MHz PowerPC 750 (G3)

The preferred model in the day to upgrade was the Pismo, because of the

design & some chose to swap G3 to G4 processor; to expand usefulness.

The Lombard specs suggest the OS X upgrade is limited to 10.3.9 Panther.

Aforementioned Firmware Update is recommended before booting Panther.

Good luck with your project! 🙂

I run a small fleet of G3s that go to Burning Man each year to produce the Black Rock Beacon, an almost-daily newspaper. We settled on the G3s because they are ridiculously sturdy. I've had no trouble finding PRAM batteries and regular batteries as well (both used original Apple products and some newer versions that still seem to be in production). Try WeLoveMacs, DVWarehouse and PowerBook Medic

For software, you can run the precursor to iLife, Apple Works. It has fine word processing and spreadsheet capabilities and also a very powerful database program, which is a little hard to wrap your mind around but great once you know it. There are instructions here: https://www.atomiclearning.com/appleworks_6_database It also has painting and drawing programs, and all of those elements integrate so that you start with a drawing and finish up in the painting program and transfer the whole thing to a word processor or database document.

I like a couple of other programs, which can be used today in emulation, but if you're looking for things to put on your computer, the old Address Book shareware program is a great way to keep track of your contacts (very flexible in your ability to search and make lists) and Managing Your Money is a great way to keep track of your finances, although you have to enter everything by hand.

Browsing might be challenging, I've heard Classzilla is the way to go, but you're best off with modern software for that. d

None of those programs are supported anymore, but you should be able to find copies.
