Apple Mail message content not showing

I've an early 2011 MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.4 on a newly installed SSD. It performs very well and I view POP mail in my preferred Classic layout. I leave Mail only to return a short while later to find no content visible on any email in any of my multiple folders, just the headers. Switching out of Classic layout the content is visible (5 lines of it at least) but, on returning to Classic mode, the content is still missing.

I've tried the various suggestions from other postings here and elsewhere including removing the "Envelope Index" and "ExternalUpdates.storedata" files from V4/MailData, rebuilding the mailboxes etc.

Seeing that the content is visible in non-Classic mode I can’t see that Spotlight reindexing can help. The content is there but not being displayed in Classic mode.

Has anyone any other ideas?

You should completely remove intego and trusteer. One "antivirus" is bad, two is really asking for trouble.

Also, from looking at your screenshot:

though I'm not at my mac and I haven't used Classic mode in years; also not a fan of the view pane, but I can't help noti you have several (as in more than one) messages selected. What happens if you select only one?

Apr 22, 2017 7:54 AM in response to parkside19

Hello parkside19,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding no content is shown when trying to view mail in the classic layout. You've tried some great steps trying to get this resolved so far. I'm happy to help.

First I recommend testing the issue in safe mode. Starting up in safe mode will allow your Mac to run certain checks, remove cache, and prevent login items from launching. This can help isolate third party issues. Use the steps and information in the link below to assist with safe mode:
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the issue persists, test in another user account. This will help determine if this is user specific or system wide.
How to test an issue with another user account on your Mac

If the behavior continues, please let us know if this issue occurs with multiple email accounts and any other steps you may have done.

Have a great day!

Several Users have reported that their third-party so-called Anti-Virus scanners were interfering with the display of email messages. If you are using such a package, you should remove it. Your premium-quality Macintosh running recent MacOS software is already well-protected from spontaneous attack.

Of course, no software can protect you if you are not vigilant in defending yourself against scams offered constantly in pop-ups and junk email messages.

""Seeing that the content is visible in non-Classic mode I can’t see that Spotlight reindexing can help ""

Did you do the re-indexing of Spotlight? Whatever logic, it might still help. You must be sure that Spotlight starts after the deletion of the index, so why not try this:

Open Terminal, copy/paste the following three commands after each other (you have to enter your password after each):

sudo mdutil -i off /

sudo mdutil -E /

sudo mdutil -i on /

after that quit Terminal. Spotlight is fast on a SSD to build a new index.

I've just discovered, purely by chance and for me at least, that the cause of message content not showing is, ironically, Safe Mode. Within Safe Mode the message content in Classic mode is visible but, after rebooting back into the normal mode, the message content is missing, regardless of the User. Switch out of Classic mode and the content is visible. I've repeated the sequence a number of times with the same result and am personally convinced.

I had tried rebuilding mailboxes, re-indexing Spotlight, removing the ~/Library/Mail/V4/MailData/Envelope Index etc. It was only because I had been in Safe Mode for another reason and immediately returned to read some mail that I made the connection. Fortunately, I have very recent backups. So, what is Safe Mode doing?

Apr 28, 2017 5:09 AM in response to parkside19

"So, what is Safe Mode doing?"

Starting in Safe MOde menas that the mac starts up without any third party software and just a few system software that is needed to run. If you restart in SafeMode and then restart back to normal, several system caches are emptied, settings are not changed.

Mail should display the content, also in Classic mode. In Classic mode, the left side the mailboxes are listed, on the right side the emails with the content of the selected the selected email in the lower part.

In the new mode, left side the same, middle part of the window the mails with some line of text, the right side the content of the selected email. If this is empty your issue is still there, if there is no right side at all, you do folowing:

set to Classic lay-out, on the bottom of the total Mail window in the middle is a small grey dot, grab it with the mouse pointer and move it upwards about halfway, this not as easy as it sounds. When up, the email content is visible. Now go back to the new mail layout and the mail content must be visible on the right side. Tedious, stupid action.

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
