iPad Mini 2 Battery Problem

Hi,

My mother's iPad Mini 2 has been having an issue for the past few months that I think is hardware related and I wanted to confirm that.

Basically it will randomly after a night of charging display the following screen:

..which I am aware is the usual "your battery is low, connect it to power" screen. Here's the thing, though. When we do this, it stays like that. The first time it happened I messed around with it for a few minutes because my mom had said she had just charged it and it should not be dead. After holding down the home and power buttons for a few seconds (which I had to do several times), it finally booted flawlessly and the battery level in the status bar was 100%. So while the battery is fully charged, it still displays the dead battery screen until I randomly mash the buttons on it before it finally comes back on and she can use it all day without needing to plug it in again.

Before you ask:

Yes, I have reinstalled the software on it. It is running the latest version.

No, the battery level indicator is NOT stuck at 100, it goes down as the battery does drain.

The iPad Mini 2 is fairly new. Only had it for about 1 and a half years.

It is the 16GB model with no cellular.

We DID take it to the Apple store, and the guy at the door didn't believe us and he thought we just didn't understand how a dead battery works and shooed us away saying to plug it in and it would work. Evidently not.

So do I need to replace the iPad? I am not taking it apart myself.

Also I am not sure if it is under Applecare, but that's not a major issue if it isn't.

Thanks in advance.

I am having the exact same issue with my IPad Mini 2. After doing the customer service chat, and going to the Apple store the best they can tell me is to restore it, but instead of reloading my backup on it set it up as new... major pain in the butt. If that doesn’t fix it the Apple genius tells me that it’s going to cost me $199 to replace it because my battery tests out OK, so it’s not a battery issue.

Needless to say if setting it up as new doesn’t take care of the issue I’m not going to be very happy. Having owned Apple products since the iPod photo with color display (around 2005). I was really hoping their customer service would see that this is a power and battery issue, and replace it iPad for $99 like they say they will...

Well, the issue wasn’t resolved by setting the iPad up as new.

Friday morning after charging overnight the iPad woke up just fine.

Saturday morning after charging overnight it wouldn’t wake up and showed the dead battery icon. I once again tried plugging it in and unplugging it, after multiple attempts it came on again. Saturday evening I once again put it in restore mode, restored it from iTunes, and set it up as new.

This morning (Sunday) it once again did the same thing. Dead battery icon, and wouldn’t wake up. After attempting reboot, and pushing the power button repeatedly it finally came on, and shows 100% battery.

The fact that this issue persists, even though it’s been restored and set up as new multiple times now clearly shows that this is not a software issue. This is a battery and/or power issue.

I have scheduled to send it in for battery/power service as I feel that I’ve exhausted all other options.

I am worried that they will just test the battery, tell me it’s fine, and return it without resolving the issue.

Customer service via their twitter account has assured me that they will throughly inspect it, and if they can’t find any issues, and can’t reproduce the problem they’ll contact me to see where we go from there.
