Glitch in Photos when cropping in edit mode (Macbook Pro)

Hello,

Photos: Versión 2.0 (3150.4.120)

MAC OS: Sierra 10.12.4

When i crop a photo it breaks badly: the result is a photo completely messed up, sometimes black background and/or with several broken replicas of the photo. Sometimes is mixed up with other photo of the library. The effect can be seen just after pressing "ok" in the thumbnail in the edit view and sometimes in the preview just after make the cropping.

Until now it happens with jpg files.

I think this is a bug, i couldn't find much about it in the web.

Is this bug acknowledge by apple?, is there a way to fix it?

This is the result after exporting, in the Phtos app is the same.

I did not read through all the comments, so I hope I'm not being repetitive here.

I have been online and on the phone with Apple, and they gave me a workaround for the issue for now. They are working on the problem, and hope to have a Photos update (possibly) sometime this fall.

Take the photo with the messed up thumbnail, go into Edit and hit rotate ONCE. From there, push Control and hit the rotate icon again, once, to reverse the image back. It worked great for me on the photos I had issues with. I have had problems with photos taken with both of my Canon Rebels, my iPhone photos that were air-dropped, as well as photos that were imported from a back-up hard drive.

Hope the workaround gives you some results until we get the new version. I miss iPhoto! :-(User uploaded file

Two more tests:

1 - log into another user account on your Mac and try the same test there. This will help tell us if it's limited to your account or system wide.

2 - boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try the same test there. It the problem does not persist that will tell us that the problem is created by 3rd party software that is not loaded in Safe Mode.

OR maybe you were hacked by the Russians.? 🙂 Sorry, that just sort of slipped out.

we are seeing more and more samples here of photos corrupted after editing.

See for example this discussion about corrupted NEF files Re: Photos.app lines in image after edit

Have you tested, if the original image files you imported are still readable without problems?

If not, make a test and export the image with "File > Export > Export unmodified original" and try to open the image in another editor that can process the RAW files.

And reimport the imported file to a different Photos Library and test if it is showing the same problems in the new library.

I have exactly the same problem. Any image that is edited in an external editor such as Photoshop, Affinity Pro or anything else and imported into Photos and cropped becomes corrupted with other photos in the library. Update: Images also imported directly into Photos in original .NEF or .DNG format randomly display with significant pixelising (Jagged Edges). Images in the library randomly change. Any attempt to crop creates randomly fragmented images. This on a brand new custom built MacBook Pro 15 inch 2,9 GHz 16 MB Radeon Pro 460 2TB machine. Local Apple re-seller has installed virgin OS, repaired photo library several times (we have 6 images in library imported from original back ups) and process them from RAW in Photos or other photo editors, leaving in original format or saving as JPEG or TIFF. No difference, same result. It's a complete disaster and renders the entire system useless for my work. I have scoured the internet and after 6 weeks of spending nearly 80 hours on this issue, Alvahro is the only case i have found so far, exactly the same as my case. If this was an issue with Photos, surely Apple would know about it and have already launched an update, they are good and fast with updates/fixes. I downloaded iPhoto and Aperture and there is absolutely no problem at all but they are ancient platforms and not designed to work with what i have in my hands, a $4500 machine that is completely defective! The patch suggested by one of the answers unfortunately does not resolve anything.

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Edit and import some photos, crop in Photos to test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

Old Toad - Many thanks. Mmmm, i'll have to set up new user later, tomorrow. Have to get some images on memstick and a dongle as these new MacBooks don't have usb or card readers. I don't believe 3rd party is to blame, see below works overtime in 3rd party editor as well as iPhoto and Aperture. IMO something in Photos/Sierra/Hardware but don't know what. Have tested on similar machines using same ver of Sierra and Photos and no problem. Another thing maybe Alvahro didn't mention, it is difficult to work with the cropping tool. Have to try retry several times. In MacBooks i've tried where no issues, cropping quick and easy just like in iPhoto and Aperture.

What I wanted to know is, if the originals are getting damaged by importing to photos or if only the versions in Photos are getting corrupted. That is why I asked for the test to export one of the original image files again from Photos and see, if they are still working in Lightroom or your other software after having been touched by Photos.
