Saving MacJournal Data from Yosemite OSX?

I need to upgrade to Yosemite or El Capitan. I have used MacJournal for years and all my data is on it. How can I save my data and transfer it to the new OS? Or are there other options to migrate this data to a workable application on this Mac?

I do not have windows installed.

I have been unable to understand how to do this, and have no current workable options.

I'm 70 years old and don't get the current tech well.

You can download and install a new OS without it affecting your data, except for programs that may not be compatible with the newer OS. Before attempting, you need to make a backup, preferably 2 separate backups on 2 separate drives. That should cover an oops. Use Apple's Time Machine or a clone program. If you have never downloaded Yosemite using your Apple ID, it is no longer available. If running 10.6 as your profile shows, you can install El Capitan.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher

MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

`

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed

2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)

8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

El Capitan 10.11 Compatibility information

macOS Sierra 10.12: Compatible Apps

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

You are welcome. macjack answered the MacJournal question. Below are the requirements for Sierra.

How to get macOS Sierra

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

macOS 10.12 (Sierra) requires one of the following Macs:

iMac (Late 2009 or later) Model 10.1 and higher

MacBook (Late 2009 or later) Model 6.1 and higher

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or later) Model 6.2 and higher

MacBook Air (Mid 2010 or later) Model 3.1 and higher

Mac mini (Mid 2010 or later) Model 4.1 and higher

Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or later) Model 5.1 and higher

As well as:

Mac OS X version 10.7.5 or later

2GB of RAM (4GB minimum is more realistic)

9GB of free disk space

Eric,

That superbly tells me what I need to know about installation. Thank you!

I have Yosemite. However, it does not support Mac Journal, nor do the subsequent OS X's. There a lot of important stuff on there with no directions from Apple how to preserve it with accessibility. Is there a successor program in the higher level OS that will safely transfer my data to my new OS and preserve it?

Before I can migrate to the later OS or higher, I need to know how and to what replaces MJ with an operable text program that will function with my old data. Can't find that answer.
