In Apple Pay, why does the merchant see my real credit card number?
I had been given to understand that when using Apple Pay, the merchant never sees your actual credit card number, only the unique number generated within Apple Pay itself.
However, whenever I pay for food at Subway, the last four digits of my ACTUAL credit card number (not the unique Apple Pay number) are always printed on the receipt. Which suggests that the payment terminal at Subway actually sees my real credit card number.
This only happens at Subway - at all other merchants where I use Apple Pay, the unique Apple Pay number is the one that's printed on the receipt (in lieu of the actual credit card number).
Can anyone explain this? Why is Subway the only merchant that sees my real credit card #?
