Can I use a previously used email address for my Apple ID email?

Last year I had an issue with my Apple ID email address.
It was actually "my" issue and nothing to do with the email address.

Anyway, I changed my Apple ID (which is essentially an email address) to a different gmail account I created just for this reason.

Well, now I want to change it back to the original email account I was using for my Apple ID. It is an email address I have had and been using for many years.
Can I go back to this email address as my Apple ID?

Good afternoon McKinney777,

Thanks for your question. If you originally changed the Apple ID by editing it with the new email address, then you can change it back. If you created a new Apple ID, then you will not be able to merge the two accounts. You may decide to keep whichever account has the majority of your purchases as your Apple ID for the iTunes Store, and use the other Apple ID for iCloud. Be sure to add your purchased content to your iTunes Library.

Change your Apple ID

Redownload music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, and App Store

Turn on Automatic Downloads for iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store purchases

Take care.
