creating new folder on my desktop without all the desktop files

Recently someone was helping with some website documents on my computer. Now when I create a new folder all of my desk top folders show up in the new folder. I never had this happen before. I would like my new folder that I am creating for the desktop not to contain all the desktop folders show up in the new folder. Anyone no how to correct this? Thanks in advance

Right-click on your Desktop, and from the contextual pop-up menu, select New Folder. Perform a single-click on the “untitled folder” name. Wait a second, then another single-click. The folder name will become light-blue, and you can type the new folder name, followed by a return.

My daily driver is El Capitan, and it requires that new folder naming (non-Trackpad) ritual that I previously described. With macOS Sierra on my MacBook Air, a two-finger tap on the Desktop, and selection of New Folder, results in the untitled folder field ready to just type the new folder name.

When you initially create a new folder, it should be empty by default.
