If the clip is photos with no moving video, there is nothing to speed up, and so the speed button will remain grayed out. When working with photos you change their duration to make them play a longer or shorter time. Photos are static images with no frames per second to incease or decrease, but you can makes the display a longer or shorter time by changing their duration. Try selecting an actual video clip that has motion in it, and see if the speed adjustment button becomes activated.

Thanks for replying. Timeline is the bottom section [?yes] I have all the frames there. I looked it up on google and saw this:

Select a range in the timeline

  1. In the timeline, position the pointer where you want to begin the selection.
  2. Hold down the R key, drag left or right across the clip, and release the mouse or trackpad button when you complete your selection.

Everything is highlighted with a yellow box around each frame. But if I right click on a frame, the speed editor is still grayed out... I got up to this stage hours ago ..but no joy yet.

Hi, Michael,

Assuming you are using latest iMovie version (10.1.5), the speed editor button should become active as soon as you finish your selection. Since it is not becoming active, try restarting your computer and launching iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears.

Yes it's 10.5.1 version--restarted computer, then imovie with cmnd option; preferences deleted, selected movie from theatre, launched, photos appear in bottom section of screen, got yellow outlines, so selected; tapped pad to get dialog box, speed editor still greyed out. So maybe there's something i should have done before --my photos show as 'project media' + they are in the imovie library. Clck icon on RHS doesn't function either. So not sure what to do next. Thanks for your help. When i hover over the clock ,it says, 'To adjust the speed of a clip, add it to a project' but i can see the project in 'theatre'.

I am a little confused by your procedure. You launch iMovie from the applications folder, not the Theater, while holding down the Option and Command keys, and then selecting to delete preferences.

Once iMovie is launched, you should click on the Projects button, that will take you to the projects browser screen where all the projects are displayed with thumbnail icons. When you click on a displayed project's icon, you will get a view that shows you a timeline along the bottom with clips in it, and a preview screen. Select a video clip in the timeline (not a photo), and the speed button should become active.

Hi,

Made notes on your instructions:

"I am a little confused by your procedure. You launch iMovie from the applications folder{= yes, did this} not the Theater, while holding down the Option and Command keys, and then selecting to delete preferences. {=yes it worked}

Once iMovie is launched, you should click on the Projects button, that will take you to the projects browser screen where all the projects are displayed with thumbnail icons. {= yes, got that } When you click on a displayed project's icon, you will get a view that shows you a timeline along the bottom with clips in it, and a preview screen. {yes} Select a video clip in the timeline {= the clip is made entirely of photos --there's no 'video' --but it runs just fine as a clip}(not a photo), and the speed button should become active. "

when i select a clip ; either one frame or the whole lot, the speed button is still grey out = i read somewhere that there's a bug in the program [?????]

Not sure -- might be something i did or didn't do [?????]/ or perhaps a bug????
