Why is new computer/itunes not letting me update my old ipod shuffle?

Why is new computer/itunes not letting me update my old ipod shuffle?

Here's the situation:

  1. I have a new air. Opened itunes for the first time tonight and signed in.
  2. I have an old ipod shuffle that I put music on 3 years ago while on another computer. It is plugged in and showing up in "devices." (see link to imgur below)
  3. I discovered I have songs from 2006 in the magical itunes cloud so "authorized" the new computer so I could download them.

Two issues: I cannot add any music to the ipod shuffle & I cannot delete any music from the ipod shuffle.

Factor: I no longer own the computer I used to upload the ipod shuffle originally.

Here are screenshots of what I'm seeing from the library view and from the ipod view. http://imgur.com/a/C3nz

OK, so the view you are showing for the iTunes Library is showing you music you have purchased but which you have not yet downloaded to the Library on your Mac. That is what the clouds are for - the Mac Library.

To get the music on your iPod Shuffle, you have to click on the little Shuffle icon in the top bar of your window, next to "Music". Then you will see a list of Sync settings for the iPod including the music sync setting option. Because the iPod was sync'd to a different computer, it is going to want to erase the music on it, so you can sync to the new Library on your Mac. You need to follow the instructions in this support article to sync the iPod:

iTunes for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

Best of luck,
