sometimes i need to press the home button more than once to exit a application, i did a full restore, and it seems like it only stated doing this on ios 10.3.1

Alternatively,You should enable Assistive touch (Settings→ General→ Accessibility→ under Interaction appear AssistiveTouch →
turn AssistiveTouch ON) button on the iPhone Screen to perform various tasks like close all open apps, activate Siri, mute/unmte sound and much more.🙂
No need for that unless your Home button is not working right.
