Have you checked this by choosing your hard drive and "Get Info" (command-i)?
If that's so, you need to copy off enough data for it to function properly. Generally speaking the more hard drive space the OS has the more efficiently it will function. Copy files and folders to any removable media then delete from your hard drive.

Hi,
To add to macjack's suggestions:
If you haven’t yet done so, backup in case you delete something you wish you hadn't. Then use one or more of the following to see exactly where your space is being used, then transfer/delete larger files until you increase the available space to at least 10GBs and that will do for now; do not transfer/delete anything unless you're sure of what it is, and not something the OS needs:

The same thing happened to me with my MB Air. I took almost all of my photos off after copying them to external drives and backed up my entire Pictures folder to Dropbox.
I still got the message, so I did the same thing with my Documents folder. When i continued to get those messages, I knew something else must be going on.
I ran Disk Utility (a program in your Utilities folder), I ran Disk First Aid (its at the top of the window) it variously showed the disk full or nearly so, which I knew was BS. At some point, when I'd start Disk First Aid, it would only go a little ways and then seem to freeze up. Then, after a few days later, after walking away for a while, I was shocked to find a message from it that said my hard drive was corrupted.
I am bringing my MB Air into the Apple store by me next week, after talking with Apple support, who walked me through some diagnostics.
Good luck.
