How do I get rid of old Extensions?

I use Sierra...but an EntreCheck run finds a bunch of obsolete files I'd like to delete:

User uploaded file

I realize that the old files are probably harmless, but I'd like to delete them anyway. However, a Spotlight search comes up with nothing. How do I get rid of these files?

Thanks!

As per article : Install and manage Safari extensions on your Mac - Apple Support

Turn off or uninstall extensions

  1. Choose Preferences from the Safari menu, then click Extensions.
  2. Select an extension from the list.
  3. Turn off the extension by deselecting the Enable checkbox. If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, click the Uninstall button.

But , don't try to remove the files manually in /System/Library/Extensions , possibility system will get corrupted and you have to install the OS once again.

Here's the latest:

Track down the appropriate uninstaller or uninstallation instructions for each one and use it. Never use an "app zapper". Never try to delete files in hidden directories by hand.

Actually, this is pretty sound advice; I'll stay away from the "app-zapper"-type apps. The problem I encountered was that the installers are old and/or address obsolete technology. I can't seem to find the appropriate installer...because the software or devices don't exist anymore, or relate to software I don't immediately recognize.

I really wanted this to work, because it's the instructions were so user-friendly. However, the extensions I want to delete aren't Safari extensions, and my extensions are so old that I can't even find them via manual or Spotlight search. An EntreCheck run will detect remnants of the old software, but not the old preference files or drivers.

Hello again poikkeus1,

You have two options. Your EtreCheck report does list the directory that contains those extensions. The actual file names may be different than the bundle IDs listed in the EtreCheck. You can go in there and start deleting files.

Unfortunately, you didn't include your entire EtreCheck report so I can't say whether or not you can easily damage your system. If you are running El Capitan or later, then SIP is enabled by default and will prevent you from from damaging the system. But there is no way to distinguish 3rd party extensions that you still need and ones that are really old.

Another option is to erase your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Then, migrate only user documents from backup and manually reinstall the software that you really want to use.

Here's my complete EntreCheck report; pardon the length.

As you can tell, my machine and files are in good shape. My only interest would be to delete (if it's possible) several of the obsolete system preferences that remain - things like the Kapersky and Palm. (By installing and deleting Kensington, I got rid of twelve extensions; which is why there's a small difference between the EntreCheck reports.)

May 14, 2017 3:31 PM in response to etresoft

Thanks for your detailed explanation.

The solution, then, is pretty straightforward. There isn't an "easy" way to fix the EntreCheck printout without resorting to an extensive erase and install; in his case, using Terminal risks causing damage.

The EntreCheck report isn't even an issue with normal computing. The extensions listed take up only a few bits, so there's no problem just leaving the obsolete extensions on my iMac and ignoring them.

May 14, 2017 4:23 PM in response to poikkeus1

I don't know. A current EtreCheck report should list which of those extensions are loaded and which are not. It should also list if you have been having kernel panics or not. I don't know what problem, if any, you have been having that prompted you to even look for such things.

Generally, installing software on a Mac, especially anything that requires an administrator password, is extremely difficult if not impossible. There are risks involved with a botched uninstall. There are also risks involved with running old system modifications. There is no way to tell which risk is greater for your machine.

May 14, 2017 7:11 PM in response to poikkeus1

An EtreCheck report, by itself, doesn't really say anything. Your machine and files are in good shape only if you aren't having any problems - both compared to what you normally experience and compared to what you should experience.

Why are you running that ancient version of EtreCheck? And why are the colours all screwed up?

The machine appears to be running fast enough. But you have lots of really old software on a new machine.
