Just installed iTunes for Mac 12.6.1 now iTunes only quite unexpectedly, even after restart will try shout down and start again. Can I back out 12.6.1 or use Time Machine to solve problem?

Earlier today (5/15/17) I installed 12.6.1 iTunes for Mac. Was told to close it for the update since it was open at the time. Update finished OK. Now all I get is "iTunes Quit Unexpectedly" every time I try to open it. I did a system restart and got the same result. I wonder if there is a previous version of iTunes on my Time machine that I could use to replace the now-updated version of iTunes? If not, what can I do to get iTunes to run successfully? Is there a back out of 12.6.1 I could use?

See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash and try restoring the pre-upgrade library.

Otherwise see this recent post on downgrading to iTunes 12.5.5. Remove the current copy and reinstall 12.6.1 again from https://www.apple.com/itunes/ or try the older build if that doesn't work. I'll dig out a link for the 12.6.0.100 dmg if you really need it, but it wasn't all that.

You need to uninstall the current version before you can reinstall an older one. This was addressed in the earlier link. I posted the link to 12.6 to give a choice of which build to revert to.

Here is one of many guides on how to uninstall iTunes from a Mac: http://www.inforaid.com/how-to-uninstall-itunes-from-mac-os-x-best-method/. These are direct links to the iTunes12.5.5.dmg or Tunes12.6.dmg installers on Apple's servers. See also Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash for steps to roll back to the pre upgrade version of your iTunes database.

1. Download iTunes 12.6.0.100 from: **********

*********

2. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor on your Mac, find out the process "iTunes-Helper” and double click it.

The following window will pop up, click Quit button.

User uploaded file

3. Open Applications > Utilities >Terminal to delete the current iTunes .app and type: "sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app”, then press Enter key.

4. Install iTunes 12.6.0.100.

5. Disable auto-upgrading in iTunes.

iTunes 12.6.1 crashes on start. Seems to be an issue with the DYLD library. Was fine until the 12.6.1 upgrade and seemed to be running OK, but shut down iTunes, tried to reopen it and nothing!

iTunes cannot be opened because of a problem.

Check with the developer to make sure iTunes works with this version of macOS. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and macOS.
