Itunes 12.6.1 Update Crash Workaround

After looking around for ways to open itunes without it crashing I found a way.

If you go to a song in Finder (right click + open with itunes) it'll open itunes without any crashes and then you can use itunes normally.

For some reason opening itunes with the app button is buggy.

Hope this helped anyone having the same problem.

There are hints from some other threads that third party tools that attempt to integrate with iTunes can cause problems. Try uninstalling any such utility to see if iTunes works properly without it.

You may find iTunes will launch without crashing if you double click the iTunes Library.itl file or a song file.

You can try reinstalling the current version of iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ over the top of the existing one. Or see this guide to uninstall iTunes from a Mac: http://www.inforaid.com/how-to-uninstall-itunes-from-mac-os-x-best-method/ then restore one of these recent builds direct from Apple's secure servers:

Another approach is to roll back to one of the recent builds. Here is one of many guides on how to uninstall iTunes from a Mac: http://www.inforaid.com/how-to-uninstall-itunes-from-mac-os-x-best-method/. These are direct links to the iTunes12.5.5.dmg or Tunes12.6.dmg installers on Apple's servers. I have the same problem after starting a third party software for iTunes.

iTunes 12.6.1 on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 beta 1: iTunes crashes and can't reopened.

My Solution: manual download of iTunes 12.6.1 on Apple's homepage and manual reinstall.

-> iTunes 12.6.1 works, but I can't use my third party software. At moment of use, iTunes crashes again. Seem to be a problem with my third party software and the new iTunes version, not an iTunes problem in my case.

Could you link to those threads? Or are they on different, non-Apple forums? After a couple hours of troubleshooting, I discovered that third party utility issue the hard way. It's a problem, but at least it's a universal, repeatable problem that the software developers are aware of and are working to repair. Running the utility crashes iTunes, and after that first crash, iTunes will not open at all. Reinstalling iTunes 12.6.1 from the Apple dmg resets it, and everything works again.

At least in my case.

I used a similar thing (using a mp3 file to open iTunes) for the same iTunes crashing problem but found it worked better using an alias of the iTunes Library.itl file.

None of the suggested fixes for a "corrupt library" I tried would last, even though they seemed to have worked, and I even ran Disk Utility etc., and iTunes 12.6.1 would then crash on opening using its icon.

But so far I seem to have found a solution, at least for me (running Mavericks 10.9.5), after reading about plugins and utilities etc., none of which I use. I even did a thorough search to confirm.

I did do a cold boot using Safe Boot Mode and my iTunes 12.6.1 opened and worked properly. Hmmm… ??? Strange. I have no idea why.

Then doing a shutdown and booting normally, and I've also done several restarts since, my iTunes 12.6.1 opens and runs without crashing.

I have no idea what got changed but it seems to have worked.

Previous reboots and shutdowns and even a clean iTunes 12.6.1 remove and install did not fix the iTunes crashing problem when using its icon to open.

Anyway, my iTunes 12.6.1 is still working as it should after doing a Safe Boot and then a shutdown and boot up.

I was stumped by that too. The only place you can put files in the Dock is over near the trashcan. Assuming your Dock is at the bottom of your screen, you will see a faint line to the left of the right end. You can put files only between this faint line and the right end. I think by default, the only things there are the download folder and the trashcan.

I put my .itl file just to the left of the trashcan.
