Itunes 12.6.1 Update Crash Workaround

After looking around for ways to open itunes without it crashing I found a way.

If you go to a song in Finder (right click + open with itunes) it'll open itunes without any crashes and then you can use itunes normally.

For some reason opening itunes with the app button is buggy.

Hope this helped anyone having the same problem.

Worked for me too, but only after a couple of reboots and a long wait for iTunes to 'check files' . Clearly, Apple have reissued 12.6.1 with a patch, but interesting there is no mention of the problems with the earlier version. We were in the process of going all Apple in our household, but may be we should reconsider if we are going to be faced with this old school Microsoft level of arrogance.

For any of those that missed it and need it, it seems Apple has made the latest version build available via the Mac App Store:

The new iTunes 12.6.1 update does have a slightly higher build number at 12.6.1.27 compared to 12.6.1.25 on the previous release, although any changes are likely very minor considering the version number going unchanged.

Read and do what turingtest2's post above suggests.

Just reinstall the version you want and the direct download links are provided above as well.

PS: Their "fix" was updating and releasing the iTunes 12.6.1 version ages ago, (no more than 2-3 days later I recall) but it only varies by the build numbers. I'm sure the goofy version that many of us got has been deleted from their servers. Notice that there isn't a .26 build version listed above which could be the goofy one you ended up with!!!

One phone call with support had me reinstall iTunes and it is the 10.6.1.27 version. Today I was told the problem is my OS. I am running Mavericks, 10.9.5 because I also use and need Adobe CS 6. Last version bought and paid for, costly disk install version. I am a single household user, a graphic designer doing part time freelance work, so paying for Adobe CC in perpetuity is insane and expensive. Plus, I only use InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, don't need all those other bells and whistles. I am no coding expert, but it seems to me the part of the code that launches the software from a dock or finder must be a very small part of the program and could easily be corrected for a Mavericks user. That OS is only 3-4 years old! Come on, Apple....this is BS.

Your work around worked beautifully and kept me relatively cool while working with Apple Support for weeks to fix the launch problem. Did all sorts of things, collecting activity logs, reinstalling iTunes, reinstalling Mavericks OS ( which I need to be compatible with my Adobe CS 6). None of that yielded any positive results. I updated when they pushed through 12.6.2.20, expecting the bug to be fixed. HAH! Not only is it not fixed but now your terrific work around doesn't really work either. Any new ideas? I have to keep relaunching every time I perform a different action, plug in to update any devices.
