My only suggestion now is to make an appointment at an Apple Store so that someone can do a 'hands on' search of your phone for the files. Then you can discuss with them what you did when you downloaded the documents. Good luck with this.

to do a spotlight search, swipe down from the middle of the screen, then type in a word or phrase from a PDF file. The results should show where that file is located. I tried it by searching the user guide that I have as a PDF file and it found it in my iBook app.

iBook

iBook is an app on your phone or iPad. When you download a document, you can choose to save it in the iBook app.

iBooks should be already installed on your phone but you can also download it in the App Store. Search for iBooks which is the actual name of the app.

When you save a PDF attachment, it gives you the option to 'open' it in iBooks. Then when you go to iBooks, there is an option to view PDF items.

Open iBooks, if you aren't at the main page, tap the < at the top. Then tap the title at the top middle of the page. Then either select 'All Books' or 'PDFs'. That should show you your PDF files.

Then what app did you save them in? That would be where the are.
