iOS 10.3.2 update drains battery

I have an iPhone 7 Plus. I have had no battery life issues until updating to iOS 10.3.2. Prior to the update I would get a full day of use. I could go from 6 am to 11 pm and still have 20% battery life left. Since updating to 10.3.2, I am at 50% battery life by midday with light use, and need to charge before leaving work for the day. Anyone else having this same issue since upgrading to iOS 10.3.2?

Hello pechapa,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that since updating to iOS 10.3.2 your battery life has decreased. New updates have new features that can use more battery life than previous software versions. I recommend using the steps from the following article to maximize your battery life:

I took my iPhone 6 Plus into the Apple Store, same symptoms as many others here (big jump in the rate of decrease in the battery % vs time, then shuts abruptly off somewhere in the area of 30-50%, plugging it back in for a bit causes it to jump up quickly). Store did a software reset, not much difference really, still cannot get it through a half day. Their diagnostics showed the battery to be in good shape, they saw the discharge characteristic (with not much running). I've seen the same decrease in battery life on an iPhone 7 Plus and two iPads, since about 10.3.1, but they seem to stay on longer. So it is all a bit quandary. It does seem likely a software (iOS) problem of some sort, and I kind of wish they would fix it, before it puts more wear on my batteries in various iPhones and iPads. I am tempted to have the batteries on the iPhone 6 Plus replaced, in hopes it will get through a shift again. All a bit frustrating.

YES, same here, I have an iPhone 5S used to last a full 24 hours and after their new updates I can't finish the day. A nuisance, maybe it's Android time

Good idea. Android phones are perfect. They never have problems with power drain from the battery. Which makes it hard to explain why my associate keeps his Samsung plugged in when at his desk. He says its the only way to get through a day on the battery.

Neither my ipad or my phone is under warrantee. Both suffer severe battery drain. After the 10.3.2. update on my iPad the battery just drained really fast and occasionally shut off. After a full reset it now turns off completely if it is off the the charger longer than 5 minutes. Apple wants $250 to give me a refurbished iPad. I'm not paying it. It has been put in the drawer until they come up with a fix. If they don't have a fix for it soon I will go buy a Samsung again.

I'm really happy I didn't do a reset on my phone. It is still only suffering from rapid drain. I bought a Mophie case with an extra battery so I can make it through the day with minimal use.

This is almost certainly a case of the bean counters deciding that if Apple admits they screwed up they are going to have replace and/or repair a lot of phone and tablets. I love Apple products but not enough to buy another tablet only to have it end up as a paper weight after 1 1/2 years of use.

I also updated my iPad to 10.3.3 to see if it would help at all. the iPad is still turning off about 5 minutes after I unplug it. I was really hoping Apple would fix this but I'm hearing 10.3.3 will be the last update before 11 comes out. I'm guessing the bean counters have weighed the losses and consider the loss of business from those of us who will change to android negligible.

I have been afflicted by this immobilizing battery problem with my iPhone 6 since the very minute 10.3.2 finished installing. My phone functioned perfectly prior to the update and immediately after, my phone unexpectedly shuts down, sometimes with as much as 70% charge. Also, my Touch ID failed immediately after the update and I too can feel the heat radiating through my pocket from time to time. When my phone does not shut down unexpectedly, the battery drains at about 1% per minute at idle which means I can go nowhere without a charger or power bank in my pocket.

To answer your question, I have not replaced the battery. I am certain this is a software issue and fear forking out $80+ for a new battery will be money down the drain that could be applied to an upgrade. If 10.3.3 does not provide a fix for this, I will probably bite the bullet and upgrade to the 7.

I am in a much worse situation. My phone doesn'the even charges over 3% after updating to iOS 10.3.3. I cannot put into recovery mode because it dies. I cannot restore. Anything!!!! Apple needs to help customers with this. If I don't get my phone to work again because of your bad ios software. I swear I don't buy anymore anything from apple and I've been your client since iPhone 3.

I totally agree! I updated just a week ago & this update totally drains the **** out of my battery, even when I'm not using the phone! I followed all their tips to make the battery last longer & it seems to have made it worse!! Did everything possible to no prevail. I think apples doing this on purpose to make us upgrade phones❗I don't know why they keep denying the issues with their batteries. I've had battery issues on everyone of the iPhones I've owned, from iPhone 3s to now, I now have a iPhone 6s. They all started great, with battery lasting all day even after heavy use, up until the updates came. Now my phone is dead within 5-6 hrs of light use. This is the last iPhone for me, I'm sick of their crap!

This is really a reply to all, but it's relevant to rc88288's post too...

First, let me say, I totally understand everybody's frustration. You're right to expect the phone to "just work" as promised. And battery issues are especially infuriating. I went through it too, on the upgrade to 10.3 for my 6s. And yes, Apple told me to do all the same things that didn't help... resets, etc... In the end, they heard enough noise to create the battery recall program and that's what did the trick and saved the phone.

So by all means, do keep protesting and making yourself heard. Especially, make use of the feedback link on Apple.com, because you're less likely to reach the ears of someone who can change course for Apple here on the user-supported forum.

That said, I want to bring you up to speed with what's happened on my phone, in case it will help you. Today, after skipping the 10.3.2 update entirely, I allowed both my iPad and iPhone 6s to upgrade to 10.3.3. So far, I'm happy to say there have been zero battery drainage issues with either, though it's only been a few hours. If anything, I might be getting better battery life from both.

I mention that not to gloat but because I wonder if it has anything to do with getting a battery replacement earlier. A lot of people who are still having problems seem to NOT have gotten the replacement battery during the recall. I wonder if Apple will need to widen that recall pool. I strongly suspect that's the case, that you who are having problems also have some kind of battery defect that's triggered by the firmware update.

Do consider it as a possibility and prod Apple to answer you on that question. They won't do so readily, when you first bring it up. So you have to keep pushing and prodding. Hope that helps someone.

P.S. I've been an Apple user, either directly or through my family when younger, since 1980 or so. Right from the start. The years I had to use an IBM Thinkpad for work... sucked. But then Jobs came back to Apple and I got back into the "family" again. I can't begin to count for you the number of MacBooks, iPods, iPads, and other Apple products I've had since. These days, I'm also a pretty happy shareholder.

All that said, I've been annoyed with one glitch or another many times across the products. An OS problem, a faulty lid, battery issues. But for the problems I've had, I've seen my friends on Samsung, HP, IBM, Motorola, etc go through much, much worse. I would never switch away from Apple for those poorer alternatives.

Particularly, to those that are using this issue as a reason to switch to Samsung, remember that they have had there own widely reported battery problems with several models in the last few years, including at least one that causes fires and keeps the Samsungs officially off airplanes. I'm just saying, don't be so quick to jump ship. You may land in a pool of piranha.

Mildly comforting to know that many others are in the same boat as I am. Missed my alarm the last two mornings because my Ipad was dead. I was written up for it... I had to buy a **** alarm clock just to make sure i wouldnt get fired! Thought my battery was going so brought it to a tech. He told me before he changed the battery I should go read about this update. Low and behold many others have the same issue. My Ipad Air 2 would usually go a full day off moderate use (work and recreational) and now it last minutes off of the charger before dying. My battery will drop to about 40% and then shut off. It takes me many techniques and tries to turn it back on.Tried backing up and resetting but it only helped a little, were talking minutes. Going to call Apple in the morning to complain, for all the good its going to do me. Hope they fix this soon...

I am experiencing the same issues. Massive battery drain after updating to IOS 10.3.2. My battery used to last a full day and after updating I started to experience issues literally the next day. Called Apple about it today and spoke to a senior technician named Daniel who admitted that there was an issue with that IOS version but since apple wont cop to the problem it there was nothing he could do at this time. I have tried every troubleshooting solution possible to no avail. Updating to 10.3.3 also did not help even though I was told it would. Any suggestions of what I should do Apple, or are you just going to keep deleting my posts?

I just found out yesterday there was a recall on my battery , but they don't have the new batteries in stock to fix it, they have to send your phone somewhere and will take up to 3 weeks to get your phone back... I think this is ridiculous, because they should have the part available, knowing there's a recall in effect. My phone's serial number had the letters FJ in it, so it was part of the recall. You can call any Apple store to see if your battery is affected... This recall is for the iphone 6s battery only.

Aug 12, 2017 5:11 AM in response to velvethunder

I have the done the reset and restore exactly as advised by Apple, but I'm sorry to say that it hasn't made any difference. They did a diagnostics test on my battery and told me that it was perfectly ok, and did not need replacing. Everyone here is convinced that it is something to do with the IOS10 upgrades, but Apple are avoiding the question when asked. If this isn't rectified with the IOS11 upgrade, action needs to be taken somehow!!
