iOS 10.3.2 update drains battery

I have an iPhone 7 Plus. I have had no battery life issues until updating to iOS 10.3.2. Prior to the update I would get a full day of use. I could go from 6 am to 11 pm and still have 20% battery life left. Since updating to 10.3.2, I am at 50% battery life by midday with light use, and need to charge before leaving work for the day. Anyone else having this same issue since upgrading to iOS 10.3.2?

Hello pechapa,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that since updating to iOS 10.3.2 your battery life has decreased. New updates have new features that can use more battery life than previous software versions. I recommend using the steps from the following article to maximize your battery life:

This is clearly a software problem. I have an iPhone 6 and I had to purchase a Mophie to keep my phone alive. Just today, my phone dropped from 60% to 2% in 30 minutes while I had no apps running. I turned the Mophie on and in 1 second of charging, the phone jumped back up to 60%. I turned off the Mophie and the phone continued on for the remainder of the day. Of my other 3 iPhones, the older 5 also has the problem but the newer 6s and 5se do not have the problem.

There is no way an external battery pack can charge a phone to 60% that quickly. I think iOS 10.3.2 is misreading battery levels and shutting down the phone prematurely. Apple, you need to up your game. This is software quality assurance 101.

My drain was actually worse. I'd go to bed with 75-80 and wake up in the red. I have all sorts of battery drain features always turned off.

So I ran a backup through Itunes, then simply restored from that backup and it fixed it. Took 20 minutes total and didn't have to wipe clean before restoring. I've read other places that sometimes a process gets caught 'in a loop' during an iOS update. And that sometimes it's better just to essentially redo the iOS update from scratch.

So agree with your comment and many others. Every time a release produces widespread grief .. this time battery drain in my case on an iPhone 7, the high ranking helper hints show the usual 25 steps including restore as new and progressively reload apps - anyone had this work? Don't know about others on this forum but I didnt change anything on my phone with the update and this battery drain is causing grief but more importantly based on the numbers of users involved wasting thousands (100's of thousands?) of hours of owners time. Even plugged on a Mophie pack and it will chew through this second + battery in a few hours plus turns of at 40% phone charge. I'm 67 years old, have been an Apple user from year dot, have a 100% Apple household 25 plus Apple TVs, iMacs, iPhones (5/6/7), iPads, MacBook Pros, Time Capsules etc. Lots of things annoy from time to time, use these forums for fixes and frequently help family and friends.

Plus love iPhones after having lugged around Uniden large bricks with acoustic couplers for faxes decades ago. But these battery issues after IOS updates are a total pain in the butt. Like many on this forum cant believe it when they come as a poison pill along with an essential security update. So locked in to Apple change isn't possible.

I bought Apple because I didnt care how they worked or what a .EXE was. Now the expert help adcice increasingly makes me feel I am on an old Microsoft Office forum.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. I am sitting here arguing this same sentiment with Apple Support on Twitter. Restore my phone that was functioning completely fine before the update is a waste of my time and resources. They ran a diagnostic on my batter on the phone and it's functioning fine. The issue is not my phone. When you pay almost $1,000 for a phone you expect the batter to last long than 8 months.

I have had exact same problem. Also noticed a constant spinning wheel by the phone provider on top left of screen (only when on home screen).

Tried all the battery saving techniques and nothing worked. Had to FIRST turn phone off and on again and then immediately do a hard reset (pressing button to turn phone off and without releasing it when turn phone off bar appears, press home button until Apple appears). This has worked for me.

I am getting the same issue with my iPhone 6 on 10.3.2. Never a problem before this upgrade. Not sure if it is actually draining faster or just mis-reporting the battery level since, whenever I plug in to recharge, the battery level suddenly leaps up instantaneously by 20-30%. Of course, like many others, I have read similar reports in the past concerning users of other iPhone models and other ios versions and, because I have been unaffected myself, I have tended to either feel scant sympathy, or even to poohpooh them. Now that I am affected myself I am determined that Apple should sit up and take notice. You (Apple) clearly have bad form on this, which would suggest that insufficient testing is taking place prior to software releases. Please release a tested fix soon.

UPDATE:!!! My battery issues on my iPhone 7 Plus seemed to have resolved after about two weeks. I allowed the phone's battery to drain completely and then charged the phone to full using the included iPhone charger. I noticed the battery behavior is now similar to before the 10.3.2 update. I am very relieved as the battery life was greatly reduced immediately after the update. I cannot be sure exactly what caused or what fixed this problem but I'm glad my phone is back to normal.

Wow, I am surprised your battery issues resolved after a calibration (full cycle). Has anyone else tested this?

I commented earlier about my iPhone 6 and my son's SE. They both had the same issue. I got a loaner 6 plus from work, installed 10.3.2, restored from a backup, and everything works perfectly. Long battery life. Apple has agreed to replace my son's SE (which was within the year warranty). I am convinced there is some interaction between the hardware and software just in certain phones. I'll be curious though if anyone else has success with a battery calibration. I am going to ask my son to do it tonight.

I can confirm the fix below works. A battery calibration seems to fix the problem!

I too am suffering with this issue since I purchased my 6s in February. I've spent more time on the phone and in the Apple store than I want to think about. I've had this issue two brand new phones out of the box! I've installed no apps and on one occasion, did a factory restore on the new phone, 4 hours after I took it out of the box. Apple support refused to acknowledge this issue and it is downright frustrating. My first two phones worked fine for a couple weeks and I could go a couple days without charging, then had the battery drain issue. I could tell that I experience the issue when the Usage Time and Standby Time in the Battery page are identical. When this is happening, I can barely get a half a day before I'm down to 20%. This included the two brand new phones. I am headed back to Apple tomorrow with both phones (the latest phone was an express replacement). Apple blames the battery drain on apps, or if I have WiFi enabled and I'm not connected to WiFi!! When I remind them that I have not installed any apps nor restored a backup and that the phone is restored as new, they just look at me with a blank face. I have gotten some Support people to acknowledge that others have experienced this, but no Senior Advisers will acknowledge this problem. I find that very odd.

Wish me luck at the Apple store talking to the "so called" geniuses!!

To those having issues with 10.3.2, I was as well. The only thing that fixed it for me was doing a restore and complete fresh copy of the update via iTunes. Doing a restore through the phone never did anything. I'm now back to leaving work without it being dead! Give it a try. Something must have happened with the update over air. I have a iPhone 6s.

Hi All.

I don't normally contribute anything to these discussions, in fear of not really adding anything constructive.

I was really hoping for a full proof fix or update to be discovered by now. It's really starting to really hack me off.

I have an iPhone 6 and also an old iPhone 5 that I use as well, and this update has turned them both into dumb-phones. In slightly different ways. The iPhone 5 is manageable, it has the notorious jumpy battery percentage display, so it will go from 15% up to 80% and then down again to 60% and so on, but it lasts for a while before dying on its arse/***.

Whereas the iPhone 6(this is my main phone) and as others have mentioned numerous times has become a useless source of stress, I panic each time I use it. It basically drains even whilst it's charging. I have tried everything suggested on both phones(wasted way too much time on trying); battery calibration, fresh install, factory reset, I run no location services, turned off find my phone, installed no additional apps, turned of all background services, even tried to just use the phones in Aeroplane mode with no wifi, phone on sleep, woke up to almost drained battery!! ***. Obviously during the day just with minimal use, 1-2 calls and the odd message, can't get through the day without charging it.

I know of 3 other people in my team who have similar battery drain since 10.3.2/10.3.1, it is standard practice to now leave your iphone on constant charge on your desk rather than in your pocket.

Apple, please we're all trying our hardest to cope with these issues, trying to help each other with cobble together crappy solutions, but how many more people does it require for it to be acknowledged as an issue?

Thanks

Installed 10.3.2 then started having issues with iphone 5 suddenly dying - this when battery previously showing even prior at 80%. Takes several hours plugged in to be able to power up then it says just 7%. Something very strange is going on. Never had previous issues with Apple so am feeling very annoyed. I rely on my phone and have to have it working. Hope there is a fix QUICKLY. Hoping this is not the beginning of the end of a long Apple relationship......
