I just upgraded to OS Sierra and one of the changes/problems encountered is being able to maintain the width size of my mailbox list.
I know how to expand it so I can read the name of my mailboxes and sub-mailboxes, but the problem is, I cannot maintain the width size.
Each time I leave and reopen Mail, I have to adjust the width. It is a PITA and was never a problem before.

Glenn, thank you for all the help. I am not totally sure what I just did, but I found all my mailboxes.
Even the column width expansion is retained.
The only thing now different is when I click on a message to open it, an annoying pop up box opens to display the message. I used to be able to just open the message and would open. I have looked for a setting without luck and perhaps this is another "feature" os Sierra.

Not sure what you are seeing with the pop up. Look for a check box on it next time when you might be able to click on a box not to show it again. Usually it would be at the bottom left corner of the window.
Enter into user library : macOS Sierra: Library folder
Here is the screen shot , in the bottom you can see the path .
Open Mail, set the width as required, exit Mail while holding the control key down at the same time.

Based on your response to tygb, I suggest toggling your setting at System Preferences > General > Close windows when quitting an app.

I'm afraid that did not work. Please tell me how to restore my mailbox back to its former look and setup. I will live with the inconvenience of the expanded mailbox problem.
I only show the email in my InBox, Sent and Gmail.

Thanks Glenn. I think with Sierra it just displays in a different format. I'll learn to live with it.
