Why do I have 7 UserID Aliases?

On your Mac:

  • Open System Preferences -> Users & Groups.
  • Click the lock and authenticate to unlock the panel
  • Right click on your UserID and select "Advanced Options"

I have 8 Aliases listed, including my iTunes ID, my iCloud ID, and a bunch of "garbage" like F2A4829BADD9034E and com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.34f73d23846aaf23347685.

Why are they there, should I delete any of them, and more importantly, do I delete the iCloud and iTunes IDs to prevent anyone logging on to my Mac by using those IDs?

Thanks!

And just to say, I don't understand the compulsion people have to not use iCloud services. I see many say the same thing, but to my amazement they use Yahoo & Google accounts with calendars and address books, as well as other online sites.

Well, I do not do social media and try to keep my online presence/information to a minimum. I do not allow Google nor do I have an account there. I don't trust Yahoo either, but do have an email account there for all the online "enter your email here" requirements and for junk. I don't keep private data online and do not do online backups. I was brought up in a country with very strong privacy laws and concerns and that largely shaped my opinion. I believe they now require that ISPs and email services provide 100% secure encryption. The other events that shaped it are the fact that both my health insurance and one of my banks had their servers hacked (twice) and I've been under a "possible ID theft" watch since. I just feel more comfortable and safer not making anything available to possible miscreants. My MBPs are considered "desktop" devices - they do not leave home. My iPad does leave home occasionally and I have find my phone enabled there. It won't take long to enable it on my MBP if necessary to disable the iPad. Fortunately, there isn't much private info on it as I use it mostly to read books and stream European movies/news/TV via their apps to the TV.

I understand what you are saying about protecting your privacy. My Yahoo account was hacked 3 times, my bank was hacked and also several places we shop who had our credit card info. I absolutely understand the point of being careful and limiting what I do put online, but we can't shut ourselves up in a drum to protect ourselves and expect to have fulfilled and exciting lives. Sometimes we need to look at the benefits as well as the risks and plan accordingly.

Please don't take anything I said as being personal towards you. I'm not really that much different in beliefs of protecting my privacy than you are. It was just an observation that I've seen from so many when iCloud services are mentioned.

My point being I don't understand so many people's resistance to iCloud when it is no different than using another email service with features like calendars, notes, etc. Apple just slapped a fancy name on it and added a few more features than most have in one package where you can enable what you wish to use in one easy setup window, or use online at the website.

I don't store any personal information in iCloud, and I do not use online storage for anything, except for contacts and calendars which contain no personal information. Like you, I limit my exposure to online sites. But between me & my wife having computers and iPhones and having one of my sons & grandkids living in another state, I will use whatever features make my life easier if I feel it's safe enough.
