How do I add books to itunes in order to sync to iPad?

I used to sync my books to my iPad via iTunes . This option is no longer available and there is no option to allow me to add iBooks to the menu of iTunes. At the moment I am adding books via dropbox which is tedious as they have to be added individually.

Please could someone explain how I could reinstall this option or point me in the direction of a tutorial/instructions?

The article that King_Penguin provided for you explains what you need to do to see books that are not purchased via the iBooks store on your iPad:

Download items from iCloud Drive

You can download ePub, iBooks Author books, and PDF files from iCloud Drive to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

  1. Open iBooks.
  2. Scroll to find the item that you want to download.
  3. Tap the Download icon User uploaded file in the upper-right corner of the item that you want to download. The item downloads to your library.

If you turn off iBooks in Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive, iBooks items that you save to iCloud Drive will no longer be available on that device.

The last sentence is particularly important. You need to make sure that iBooks is turned on under iCloud Drive when you click on your name at the top of the Settings App, then on iCloud. Scroll down to the iCloud Drive section and make sure that iBooks is turned on.

Read the link that King_Penguin provided. Books that are not purchased from the iBooks store are not sync'd via iTunes. They must be sync'd using iCloud Drive.

Are you using iCloud Drive for the iBooks app : Use iCloud Drive or iBooks to access your PDF files, ePub files, and books - Apple Support ?

If not the the process for syncing hasn't changed, you add books / PDFs to your computer's iTunes (iBooks app if using a Mac) via File > Add To Library or by dragging-and-dropping them into iTunes, and you should then get a Books tab on the device for selecting and syncing them e.g.

User uploaded file

You aren't seeing something like that (assuming that you aren't using iCloud Drive) ?

I am not sure why I can't access the ebooks on icloud

Where are you trying to access them ? If you mean the iBooks app on your Mac (you won't be able to access them in iTunes on your Mac) do you have iCloud Drive 'on' for it (if that's what you are also using for iBooks on your iPad) ? And you are using the same account on both the iPad and Mac ?

You are using iCloud Drive for iBooks (assuming that's what you are using) on all of the devices and on the Mac ? And by 'have the same account' you mean that you are using the same iCloud account (the store account is used for iBookstore purchases) on all of the devices (and Mac) ?

If you are using iCloud Drive for the iBooks app I'm not sure why you are trying to use iTunes - for books on a Mac iTunes is only used to select and sync books that are in the Mac's iBooks app to a device, you don't add books to iTunes itself (so it won't show in the image in your first reply), and if using iCloud Drive you don't need to sync books, you use iCloud Drive on the devices and Mac.
