Apple watch green activity ring not working

I recently upgraded my iPhone to iPhone 7. I have an apple watch 2 paired. The green activity ring worked fine with the iPhone 6s but moves very little, if at all, with the iPhone 7. The ring records mowing the lawn (Automatically) as exercise, but it will not move on walks. My understanding is that there are 2 factors the watch uses to move the ring, one is the speed you are going according to the GPS, the other is heart rate.

The last recorded walk, I had a heart rate of 9% extreme (167), 2% high intensity(131), 14% build fitness(124), 10% fat burn(100), and 62% warmup/health(90) all with no movement to the green activity ring on the watch.

I use a companion app called "Heart Watch", and the strange thing here is the rings are listed in this app under "Dashboard" (see image below)and every activity lists correctly on the green ring in that app, but not on the watch.

As stated, the rings including the green activity ring worked great paired to the iPhone 6s, but has almost completed stopped working with the iPhone 7.

Hi

To credit progress towards your Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This requirement applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.

Exercise credit is awarded for each minute during which this requirement is met. It is possible that, during your workouts, you either did not meet that requirement or only met it for part of the time.

The definition of a brisk walk varies from person to person and depends on your personal information. To check that this is accurate - and to update it over time:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

When recording fitness activities, be sure to use the Workout app (or a third-party app) and to select the relevant activity type. This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when tracking results.

For example, with Apple Watch (first generation) and Series 1 models, the watch can access Location Services data from the paired iPhone if it is taken along during outdoor walking, running and cycling workouts. Series 2 has built-in GPS.

During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record workouts when GPS data is either not relevant or not available (eg Indoor Walk), the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including pace and progress towards the Exercise goal.

For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around during daily wear and to move as expected during workouts.

Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of estimations made by Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below. The article also includes instructions for resetting existing calibration data and starting afresh. (Resetting your calibration data will not erase your Activity history).

If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of your workouts, regardless of their estimated intensity levels, track them via the Workout app using "Other" as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher. (Note that neither distance nor a route map are recorded under this workout activity type).

If you would like to send feedback to Apple regarding the pace that is required in order to earn Exercise credit, then you can do so here:

If (which you have not previously explained) your Apple Watch does not award Exercise credit when recording workouts via the Workout app and selecting Other as the activity type, then the following steps may help:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Close certain apps and restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch:

Unpair and re-pair your watch:

If the issue persists, I suggest that you contact Apple Support, make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

I have read those Jonathan, thanks!, no help there. As stated and shown the heart rate was elevated to more than a brisk walk yet the watch did not record activity. The app mentioned is not the problem, matter of fact it shows the rings better than the watches missing data. The second factor is the rings worked perfectly on the iPhone 6s only a week ago but not on the iPhone 7. User uploaded file.

The HeartWatch app works fine Jonathan! The problem is in the watch Metrics not reporting properly in the apple work out app. The metrics are there and readable by other apps (HeartWatch)but not the apple rings! ...not in the Heartwatch app. No need to contact the Heartwatch app makers...its reading and reporting just fine!

The more I study this the more I realize apple changed the metrics. Many old folks can no longer use the rings like they use too to chart their walks. Apple expects one to become an Olympic contender in the sport of "Speed walking" in order to get the activity ring to move in the "Walk" mode. Old folks are just looking to not be labeled "Sedentary" by moving their 30 minutes a day, walking the dog. They are NOT looking to enter or train for an Olympic "Speed Walking" competition! So, your PAT apple answers still do NOT answer the questions of why apple changed the metrics? Thus making the watch unusable by a certain generation.

So, your referrals to the apple watch users guide do not help with this problem!

My Series 2 watch had always worked well with the activity rings, but starting this week with the new OS update (coincidentally) I started using the "Outdoor Walk" workout and I was getting no exercise credit. In the past, my only question with its reliability was rounding, e.g. does 1 minute, 55 seconds automatically become 1 minute. (Truncation.) All during the week the step count seemed fine, but walking became "non-exercise" whether I turned the workout mode on or not - also true while using another machine at the gym that always previously gave me exercise credit. I found this thread and also the "recalibrate your watch" page. Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy - Apple Support

Good news is - I followed the second recommended step of resetting my calibration (the first recommendation did nothing) and I am back to logging exercise minutes!

I’m having the same exact issue with my Series 3. What is strange is that back in April I had the same issue while on vacation in DC. We did tons of walking but the Activity ring was not moving. I ignored it, and when we got back home to Massachusetts, it started working again.

Fast forward to now. I’m on vacation in NY. I just went on a 34 min walk for 1.76 miles. I tracked it as an outdoor walk. It was tracked in the app, but the green ring said I only did 1 minute of activity! And this behavior has been occurring since we got here a couple weeks ago. It appears that my physical location seems to have some sort off effect.

So far I have tried

  • Rebooting the watch
  • Rebooting my phone
  • Reset Fitness Calibration Data under privacy in the watch app on my phone

This is very frustrating!

I’m starting to think this may be a hardware issue. Since my last post I have tried the following:

  • Un-paired Watch then restored it from a back up. That did nothing.
  • I wasn’t running the latest software so I updated, issue persists.
  • Finally I bit the bullet and unpaired and set it up as a new watch. This was a very long process. It still says I have only done 2 minutes of activity.

I don’t see what else I can try. Goinf to take it to the genius bar and hopefully they can help me.

Yes Jonathan, that pat answer has been checked and re-checked and the information is correct! And, I am aware of using the "Other" in activities to record movement of the activity ring! I have even started renaming the activity as "Hiking"! I have even edited the metrics in the app under Watch>My Watch>Workout>Workout View>Outdoor Walk and>Other.

The point is the watch still does not record the walk with the "Apple" green activity ring on the face of the watch, yet it does a fine job of recording the "same walk" in the represented rings in the Heartwatch app. If you cannot understand that sentence then I must say I'm dealing with an AI BOT and not a person!

I've even given the watch time to adjust specifically to me and my rhythms, calibrated the GPS and re-calibrated. The only time the green ring moves of it's own accord, automatically is when I'm mowing the lawn and not indicating or setting up any pre-activity.

Thank you Chefmanykey !! You explained the situation perfectly. I have been having the same problem with mine since Dec. 2016. I sent my watch to them to have it repaired only for them to send me the same Watch back with the same issues. Its very unmotivating for me to do all this walking to not have it record on my watch but yet it records everything in my heart watch app. What do you end up doing ? Were you able to fix the problem ? I almost want to go back to my Fitbit.

I have the same problem

It was working correctly when I first bought my watch less than a year ago and then all of a sudden it does not work. I contacted Apple support and they had a look at my watch and replaced it with a new one. However I have the exact same issue with the new one and I am currently in contact weekly with Apple support as they try to fix this. Have tried all the usual unpair phone. Pair again., reset to factory settings. The only time the exercise ring closes is when I am on a Motorbike and it seems to pick it up as exercise even though my heart rate is not up. Very unhappy with this issue especially when this was the main reason I bought the watch.

So glad I'm not alone. I have had my apple watch 2 for a little over a year now and it has been FANTASTIC.. but lately all it does is record calories and stand minutes. Today alone I have taken several short walks in the 20-30 minute range (work security for a local university) and been on the treadmill twice. Both times i used the treadmill i cranked it up and had my hear rate in the 130-140 range for 10-15 minutes solid.... it didn't record a SINGLE minute. I then walked lazily around for a few minutes (feeling dejected) and magically got 4 minutes of exercise with a reduced heart rate and slower pace, that then promptly stopped. Interestingly enough I actually sat down for a while and just shook my watch quickly for a few minutes and it recorded a TON of exercise. I don't know why it has been so dependable and faithful for so long and just now decided it doesn't know how to function properly but apple needs to get it together and fix this issue. With so many users having the same problems, over the course of multiple years, it is CLEARLY a problem on their end.

I feel the same way. No motivation to exercise when your not getting credit for it. My watch quit working after a month. Now it records the first 4 minutes and stops for the day. I used to have the green ring go around 2 times for a 200% goal achievement. I’m not doing anything different just one day the app quit giving me credit. It still records my walk of (45 minutes today) 192 calories but only show 4 minutes on the green exercise ring. I’m thinking to go back to my Fitbit. It worked flaw
