audio MP4 format

Help! Every time I buy a song from iTunes (audio), it downloads as an MP4 file, which I cannot then burn to a CD, or convert to MP3 format "protected files cannot be converted".
What's going on?
How do I fix thisI've got all of these songs on my computer, but cannot create CDs from them.

mp4=protected AAC format. The store sells songs in protected AAC format (,m4p), that is ALL they sell. Your import settings in iTunes are only for your own CD's that you import. What you can do is burn your purchase to an audio CD by setting your burn preferences in iTunes for an audio CD, instead of an mp3 CD or data CD. Once you have burned your purchase to an audio CD, that audio CD can be used just like any CD you would buy at the store.

Even with your suggestion and someone else's to check the "include cd text" in the burn preferences, iTunes would act like it was burning the CD, but when I looked at it in Explorer, it still said "blank CD" and would not play even from iTunes. I finally included some tracks that I had imported from purchased CDs (track 1)in my burn list and iTunes burned the disk. Then I could play it with Real Player and take it to my daughter's CD player and it worked. So I have a disk with a few tracks I didn't really need. In the process I wasted about 6 CD-Rs trying to get one disk burned. Because even though the computer said the disk was blank, no program would touch it after the failed burn attempts.

Hi,

I am having an indentical problem whereby I cannot burn CD's.
I ahve tried mixing in a few non-purchased songs from my library that I had imported, but no success. I have checked my preferences for CD burning and they are set for "Audio CD". I have attempted to reduce burning speed for greater accuracy, instead of using Maximum speed. Problem still exists. I have emailed iTunes support and have included the CD diagnostics log file which indicates this message "The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4450(0x00001162)"/

Any ideas? I have used another PC with iTunes installed, as well as swap out many discs (using Memorex CD-R).

Waiting for iTunes support to get back to me and hopefully they have some input. This should not be that hard.
It attmepts to burn the first track, but then cancels the burning process and ejects the disk.

Look, the easiest way to get around this problem is to go into preferences when importing, or "ripping" a cd into your computer to MP3 instead of the default AAC or MP4 format. There are also programs out there that will alow you to convert your MP4's to MP3's. That way you can burn with with itunes or any other program out there. Still trying to figure out the easiest way to get my current MP4's to MP3's. I have about 40gigs of music that I ripped down from my cd collection and 1/2 are ripped in MP4. Email me in a couple of days and I should have it all figured out.

swampmeet, let me clear up a couple of things. When you rip your own CD's in AAC format, the file extension is .m4a. Those .m4a files can be converted to any other format you want. Store purchases are in ,m4p & can't be directly converted to any other format because of the DRM on the file. There is no program available that I'm aware of that can legally convert a ,m4p file to any other format. Lastly, your import settings in iTunes only affect the CD's you rip yourself, those settings DO NOT affect store purchases. The original poster in this topic was asking about store purchases.
