MacBook Pro Sierra using 106 Gb system space in a 121 flash drive.

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro Retina 13" early 2015 w/121GB flash drive. I have purged off everything I can see on my 'hard drive' including all mail and music. Documents have gone to iCloud, all optimization options are on. I have cleaned the 'hard drive' using Disk Pro (recommended before upgrading), CC Cleaner, and finally Disk Utility First Aid so there is nothing there. On 'About This Mac', it shows 106 GB for 'system files', ~8 GB Purgeable, and ~9 GB free. When I looked at my mini-mac that came with Sierra installed, it is only 22.37 GB for system files.

What have I missed or are there installation files still lurking about? 106 GB out of 121 GB seems a tad excessive in line with a Windows (shudder) OS.

Are you getting this storage information from the  ➙ About This Mac ➙ Storage menu option? If so it's been notoriously inaccurate and requires reindexing the drive a couple of times to get it right. Even then if you want the correct storage information then do what Kappy suggested: select the System folder and type Command + i to bring up the Info pane for it. That will give you the best info:

Who recommended Disk Pro?

Personally I would not use either of those software packages on my Macs.

I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. Maybe after analyzing the EtreCheck Report we might be able to find out what is actually wrong with your Mac.

That is your startup drive. You cannot remove any files that are considered system files. Not sure what you think your software has removed.

Get Correct Storage Information

Do not use the information from the Storage section of the About This Mac dialog. Ignore the Storage information as it is typically wrong. To find out the correct information for any disk: Select a Desktop disk icon. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and look at the topmost panel displayed. You will find the disk information displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used. If you have more than one disk/partition then repeat for each one on your Desktop.

Uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

Yes. My suggestion for internet security/ anti-virus tool is to allow macOS to provide the protection for you. Don't install any third party apps to screw it up.
