MacbookPro not able to start

My MacBook Pro is a late 2011 model, and has not been able to start for the last two days. The computer will power on and show a gray screen with an apple and a loading bar, then will turn white, and then it will shut off and try rebooting without having to hit the power button. I tried several different keyboard combinations while holding the power button that were suggested in other threads. The one that finally got it past the gray Apple screen was command+R, and then I was able to begin reinstalling OS X Yosemite. About an hour and a half into the download the screen became distorted and I was hoping it would help narrow down the problem, picture attached.

I suggest you check the HDD to be sure it is OK.

Repair HD and Permissions - Lion through Yosemite

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. When the Utility Menu appears select Disk Utility, and click on the Continue button.
  3. After Disk Utility loads select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button.
  5. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
  6. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button.
  7. Wait for the process to finish, then quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.

If the drive appears in the Disk Utility list without a problem then proceed with the following:

Install Lion Through Yosemite from Scratch

  1. Select the volume (the indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the side list. Click on the Erase tab in Disk Utility's main window.
  2. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button
  3. When the process has completed quit Disk Utility, and return to the Utility Menu.
  4. SelectReinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
