Unable to access email on iCloud acct

Recently I have been receiving error msgs when trying to access my email using both Outlook and Thunderbird.

First msg is "Login to server imap.me.com failed." After several tries of reentering PW I get a further msg that the server disconnected...server may have gone down...network problem. Using a browser, however, I can log on to iCloud mail using the same UN and PW that I have in my email programs. Could there be a problem with double verification?

I generated a new code and pasted it into the PW dialogue box of Outlook settings for iCloud mail. Didn't work. Tried a second code, didn't work. But it worked the first time I tried it was Thunderbird. What am I missing?

Tom

Doesn't sound like you're missing anything so not sure why it isn't working. I use Microsoft Office for Mac but don't use Outlook. You may want to post a question in the Microsoft for Mac Outlook forum to see if anyone there has an answer.

Hi FoxFith

As all I am stuck with this app specific nightmare. However my challenge seems somewhat different as I have multiple iCloud accounts (private and business) and the app specific password will not let me use more than 1 account. When I add the 1st account I go through the app specif password process and all is OK. I then go to add my next iCloud account - and generate a new app specific password - in the same app it fails and the error is AUTHENTICATION FAILED. If I use the same app specific password for both accounts if fails with the error AUTHENTICATION FAILED. If I use the password as per the account it fails with the error AUTHENTICATION FAILED. I would really appreciate some help as this is fast becoming a nightmare for me.

Thanks and Regards.

PS If anyone can throw some light on this it would be really appreciated.

if you are using a 3rd party email like outlook you have to follow these steps: You need to activate two factor authentication on your iCloud account and generate a password for 3rd part devices. 1. Go to your icloud account and log-in 2. go to settings. 3. go to manage your apple id under settings (it will ask you to log-in again) 4. Under security go to two factor authentication and turn it on and follow the steps to turn on your two factor authentication. 5. after you complete this go back into your manage your apple id (you may have to log in again) and got to APP specific password enter in the password you use for the device (you will have to do this for all your third party devices) once you enter in the password for the specific device you are trying to sync with it will generate a app specific password. Copy the password down and now enter that password into the device. All should be good after that. If you have multiple devices your are syncing with that are 3rd party devices (meaning they are not apple devices) you will need to do this for all your devices. Apparently Apple updated their security and did not tell anyone.

Hi

There is a major problem if you have more than 1 iCloud account. The first account you set up with the app specif password works great - however it is not possible to add more iCloud accounts to that app. At the moment I have lodged this with Apple support in Australia and it is progressing up the chain.

There is no truth to the 72 hour wait. I have done it multiple times with this morning.

I am working with a Dell PC running Win7 Professional 64bit. I have replicated this problem with Thunderbird (my normal eMail client) and with Mailbird and The Bat.

When there is a resolution I will put it up here.

Heres hoping that the men in Blue pull through.

In my case I was not using the correct UN. What happened was that, for covenience, I combine my four accounts under one UN, that is, wireless service, U-verse and iCloud land line phone service. When setting up Outlook for email I kept using the new combined username instead of the UN I originally chose for my iCloud account. Who knew? Once I use the correct UN everything worked fine.
