I am having trouble getting picture and sound to my television from my apple tv through a yamaha receiver. I am using the same connection as my previous apple tv, which worked fine. When plugged directly to Vizio tv, the new apple tv works as it should. Thank you.

Hello. I, too, am having issues w/ getting sound from the Apple 4 through my older Yamaha receiver. Worked great for Apple 2 & 3. Sound ran from optical audio to receiver. Apple 4 does not have this. I have also set up the Apple 4 connected directly to a tv, which works, though have a audio out from tv to another Yamaha receiver, which does work. However, one is required to utilize both the tv volume control and receiver volume control . Sound on typical flat screen tv is poor which is why I prefer to run sound through receiver. What was Apple thinking when they removed the optical audio outlet? Inquiring minds want to know.
my tv support having hdmi devices connected to it where the tv then pass on the audio to the receiver this is both tv and receiver being sony, my receiver also have hdmi ports where one can connect the hdmi device to the receiver which play the audio and then connect the receiver, though because my receiver is old that only works for 1080i hdmi which is not a good idea for 1080p appletv output
Hi. Some of the earliest receivers with HDMI implemented switching only, with no processing of the audio signal. I have a Yamaha RX-V663 from 2008 which does extract the audio from the HDMI stream, so any newer Yamaha should support it. However, it only has 2 HDMI inputs, so I connect Apple TV 4 direct to the TV (Samsung), then take the optical output from the TV to the receiver, with the TV speakers turned off. The only limitation is that I cannot use Best Available audio output from Apple TV, because it assumes Stereo for the TV. I have to explicitly set the Apple TV audio to 5.1.
