imovie 10.1.6 freeze frame to save in photos

To get the best res image out of iMovie take a screen shot of the frame from the preview screen. You will get a .png image on your desktop. Another way is to share the frame as an Image from the share options, but that will give a lower def image.

The best way to get a hi def image, though, is to do it from the Photos app. From within iMovie select the clip in the timeline and do a File/Reveal in finder. A folder will pop up with the clip highlighted. Option-Drag the clip to your desktop to copy it there. Then either drag it into Photos, or open Photos and do a File/Import of the clip. Once in Photos, click on the clip to open it. From the control bar for the clip scroll to the frame you want, then click on the little gearbox on the right side of the control bar. A drop down menu will give you the option to Export Frame to Pictures. Click on that and the frame will be exported to the Pictures folder on your Mac as a hi def TIFF file.

iPhoto no longer can be updated. However, the version that you have on your computer can still be used. You are correct that there is no "export to frame" option in iPhoto. That option appears in the new Photos app. When you upgraded to Sierra you received Photos 2.0. Upgrading to High Sierra will get you Photos 3.0, and at that time it would be advisable to update to iMovie 10.1.8.

If you want to export a frame from iPhoto you can open the video, scroll to the frame that you want, and take a screen shot of it. The better choice would be to put your video into the Photos app, and then the "export to frame" option will be available as I described in my earlier post.

There are a couple of ways to save a freeze frame, or still image, from iMovie.

One way is to position your playhead over the freeze frame in the timeline, and then share it out to Photos or to your desktop as an Image using the share selection box selection "Image". The image will be fairly low res, however. O.K. for use in a movie but maybe not suitable for printing out as a photograph.

Another way is to position your playhead over the freeze frame in the timeline and take a screen shot of it from the preview window. (Control-Shift-4 and drag select the preview screen image by pressing down on your track pad or mouse as you outline the image.) When you release, that will leave you with a .jpg image on your desktop that is higher resolution than sharing to image.

If you want a very hi res image, put your video into Photos, double-click on its icon (but don't play it), scroll to the frame that you want with the player controller, and then click on the little gearbox icon to the right of the player controller. In the drop down menu that appears select "Export Frame to Pictures". A hi res TIFF image will appear in the Pictures folder in finder, that you can drag into Photos.

I mean import your video into the Photos app. You can import it in directly from your camera by opening the Photos app after connecting your camera to your Mac. Or you can import it by opening Photos, selecting File/Import, and then navigating to your video (on your desk top, for example). Or you can drag rhe vid into Photos from your desktop.

Im working with a 9.0 version of iPhoto and can't seem to upgrade.

I don't get the "export frame to pictures" option on the gear box.

I also don't get "image" as an option for the share function.

I'm getting a new macbook within a couple weeks, so hopefully it will work on it.
