how to upgrade a mid 2010 imac

I need to upgrade my hard drive on my 2010 IMac. The system is telling me it is failing. What is the part I need to order to replace it?

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.5)

I would recommend contacting OWC, (www.macsales.com). Beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's that came with heat sensors integrated into them. Most off the shelf HD's don't have this feature however OWC has a cable that helps this problem. They also sell HDs, provide how to videos, install kits (with the correct tools) and have great support and service. Any 3.5" SATA drive will work, however due to the age of the Mac your computer will only run at SATA 2 speeds. BTW, I am just a satisfied customer. Myself and many other experienced users on these forums have had excellent experiences dealing with OWC as they specialize in Macs.

Another option to look at is to replace the HD with a SSD. OWC also supplies these and can guide you on a good solution. While the cost per GB is higher than a HD the performance is MUCH faster and will make a significant difference. If you intend to keep the computer for awhile longer this may be a worthwhile investment, however remember the computer is 8 years old now and other parts may fail.

Good luck!
