You machine is having a Kernal Panic. These can be caused by hardware or software so they can be difficult to determine what is the problem. Can you boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) or Safe Mode?
On those occasions when it happens, I've just turned off the power at the wall and turned it back on after a few seconds. Mostly that solves it.
The problem occurs shortly after the screen goes from black to grey and before the progress bar appears.

Please post an EtreCheckreport of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it as your reply to this post.

Thank you. Sometimes third party RAM can cause KPs'. I don't see any huge red flags in your report, however you should review the amount of Internet Plugins you have installed and see if you can live without some.
I suspect the issue might be hardware related however unless the KPs become more regular about the only thing you can do is run Apple Diagnostics and see if anything shows. As stated, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. Of course ensure you system is always backed up so if it is a hardware issue you will not lose your data. If the KPs become more regular take the computer to your local Apple Store or AASP to be thoroughly checked out.
What brand of RAM is installed and where did you buy it?
I bought the memory with the machine from Apple as new five years ago.
A recent Panic Log may help to identify the problem. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder... from the Go menu and paste /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
Thanks, Mike.
I had a look ether but saw nothing which looks like a panic log.
