Does a sealed iPhone have applecare?

Someone I know has a new and sealed iPhone 6s plus. Not sure how old it is.

If it has never been opened or turned on/activated, will it have applecare starting when it's turned on, or no?

Just curious how the 1 year works with new products.

Thanks!

Purchased from where? New iPhones can be bought in a lot of different places. Just curious how they know when to start the applecare. I thought maybe it was when the phone was turned on and activated for the first time.

If you buy from an authorized retailer they report the sale to Apple. If you bought from a non-authorized source, such as the many Amazon and eBay sellers, the warranty started when the seller purchased the phone, which could have been days, weeks, or months before you bought it.

It's also very easy to reseal a previously opened phone, so a sealed box is no guarantee that the phone is new. Even some authorized sellers have been known to reseal and resell returned devices, Best Buy in particular has been reported as having done this.
