speak selected text not working

Ever since I upgraded to Sierra, Speech no longer works on selected text in Chrome. I use WordPress in Chrome, and I used to highlight a bit of text, right-click on the selection and select "Start Speaking." This no longer works. If I do not highlight text, however, the entire page is read...like all the elements on the web page before my text even begins. The keystroke I set up does work, but I'm not used to using it and would like to know why the other way stopped working. If it's not meant to work anymore, those options should be taken away.
