MacBook Pro 2017 battery life?

Greetings,

How much of the battery is supposed to be drained while the lid is closed and the computer is sleeping?

I couldn't figure out why I had to charge my MacBook Pro more often than I thought I would have to.

I noticed the battery was draining more than I thought it was supposed to while it was sleeping.

From 5AM to 4PM the battery went from 76% to 55%.

Is this normal?

I believe the only programs that were open were Spark (email app), iMessage, and Finder.

There isn't much installed on this comp because it's brand new (got it on Monday) so I don't believe there are a bunch of things running in the background eating up the battery.

Are there any known issues with the MacBook Pros (2017) battery?

UPDATE

The battery just went from 54% to 49% with the lid closed and sleeping.

It was asleep for about 10 minutes.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

Ive had Macs since 1988. MacBooks since they were available. I bought a new MacBook Pro a month ago. The battery was a 3 or 4 hour battery. That's it. Really bad. I complained, traded for an Air (screen is shameful). Then got another Mac, lost money in the exchange. Hours at the store, with AppleCare, Chatting, get no where. Then, One chat advisor suggested resetting the "SMC". It resets lower level power issues. I did this and now have a 7 - 8 hour battery.

You hold shift-control-option and push the power button. Hold for exactly 10 seconds and release. That's it. Try that and resetting the p-ram. That's option-command-P-R and start the Mac. Let run with all buttons pressed for about 20 second. It should restart twice.

But I think the SMC is the key... Or get a PC. LOL

After a long talk and diagnostics with Apple, not much was found. I did have McAfee installed and my whole system was migrated over from my old MBP via Time Machine. I uninstalled McAfee and the time has slowly started to creep back up each day over the last few days. When I unplugged it today it said 12 hours of battery time remaining. After 30 minutes of use it says 7:30 remaining so that could have been a factor or the factor for me. I will try to reinstall McAfee later and see what happens then.

The only other option is to backup your machine, wipe it clean and reinstall each app one by one and see what could be causing the battery drain. Time consuming and a major pain in the butt but it may be the only way to figure out what's causing the problem.

Hello silveropal3,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like the battery on the MacBook Pro is not lasting as long as expected even after closing the lid. You can use Activity monitor to see if something is using more energy than other things. I would recommend you read these articles and use them to help troubleshoot the issue.

Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple

The Energy pane shows overall energy use and the energy used by each app:

  • Energy Impact: A relative measure of the current energy consumption of the app. Lower numbers are better. A triangle to the left of an app's name means that the app consists of multiple processes. Click the triangle to see details about each process.
  • Avg Energy Impact: The average energy impact for the past 8 hours or since the Mac started up, whichever is shorter. Average energy impact is also shown for apps that were running during that time, but have since been quit. The names of those apps are dimmed.

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

Hey silveropal3,

Thanks for keeping us updated. If it doesn't look like any applications are using an excess amount of energy, the next step you may want to take is to try and isolate the cause using Safe Mode.

If you still have battery issues after optimizing your computer's performance and checking for malfunctioning software processes, test in Safe Mode. Safe Mode limits the active items on the system and allows testing in a more minimal environment. If the battery life is better in Safe Mode, you might need to do further software isolation for the items disabled by Safe Mode to determine what the power draw is while not operating in Safe Mode.
