Time Machine backup fails

Several weeks ago I got repeated messages on my iMac saying that the TM backup had failed, and indeed the last previous backup was usually at least several hours earlier. I was using a G-drive mini that had worked flawlessly for years. In an email exchange with the G-drive people, I was told that it was probably time to replace the mini. So I bought a new G-drive (I think mini is no longer produced), and it seemed to work fine.

But--it too is now repeatedly unable to do a backup. One issue: our wi-fi has been a bit irregular of late, running very slowly at times, and requiring a modem unplug and reboot to get it going. The modem is fairly new, and I can't find anything on CenturyLink's website to diagnose its health. I know I have to set a day aside to call them and see what they might be able to figure out.

A couple of additional factors: a few months ago, my not-quite-year-old iMac just quit. I don't remember exactly, but I think I did a restart for something, and it just wouldn't load and reboot. I spent more than an hour on the phone with an Apple guy, who was terrific, and ultimately I ended up with new system stuff (I think--I'm out of my depth here). One result is that I occasionally get security checks (like just now, from Apple) because I'm using an "unknown device." Is it possible that I've still got some weird glitch buried in my computer?

And, oddly, the little icon for TM on the upper right of the desktop doesn't spin when a backup is in progress--I'm pretty sure it used to do that.

Meanwhile I'm hoping someone can suggest a fix that doesn't involve what will be an excruciating exchange with our phone company/ISP.

And maybe someone can even verify my experience with this computer as not so surprising: I have had more troubles and glitches with this computer (mfg. "late 2015) and Sierra than I have with all of our previous Macs, dating to 1987(?) put together! Even my magic mouse is on the fritz, but that's a different forum . . .

The spinning icon in the menu bar was changed to the below. When you see the triangle, Time Machine is backing up.

Both the Wi-Fi and the modem can affect Time Machine backups. Until you are able to get the network working again, it is difficult to troubleshoot the problem. Below are some troubleshooting articles for Time Machine.

Me again, Eric. I ran EtreCheck again, and got another below average (i got a good yesterday, before I got your latest reply???) The only red was on google.daemon.plist, which failed.???

Should I be worrying about this? I ran the DetextX app you suggested, and it indeed showed some MacKeeper stuff here and there, which I assume is now gone. Reading further in the links from the "failed" to Apple support made me want to give up and junk my computer, as it sounds as if mine may be fatally compromised. I'll paste in the latest EtreCheck, in case you care. I wish I knew why I'm below average. Not my aspiration, actually.

Thanks.

Thanks, Jaxfm, but no luck. I'd pretty much plumbed Apple Support, and nothing helped. As noted, my OS is up to date, and my new G-drive has no problems, according to Disk FirstAid.

Questions remain: if wi-fi is interrupted, can that screw up TM? Why no signal from the icon that TM is backing up?

Can a faulty modem foul things up, even if it's wi-fi and not directly connected to my TM backup disk?

Still hoping for some info . . .

Jun 28, 2017 11:32 AM in response to Eric Root

Thanks, Eric! I won't know whether this is what I needed until my backup fails again--but maybe it never will. I learned recently that mackeeper was a bad deal, but thought i'd purged it--obviously not.

i'll run your EtreCheck again and see whether i've improved.

Thanks a lot. I don't think you need points from me, but I'll try to give you a Solved gold star.

Try going to System Preferences/Users & Groups, unlock the padlock, select your account, and then Log in Items. Select Google Chrome and use the minus key to delete it.

Restart the computer, do not open Chrome, and test. Then try another Ertrecheck report.

Jul 3, 2017 3:44 PM in response to Eric Root

another backup failure:

"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."

BUT: after trying repeatedly and unsuccessfully to eject my backup g-drive, I went back to the TM preferences and re-checked "auto backups," which I'd unchecked in my attempt to eject. So now TM is "preparing backup," although the disk icon still appears to be selected (for ejection).

I've looked at the extensive info on the links you provided and haven't found anything that just says Hey, Gail, here's what to do in your case.

You mentioned that Sierra no longer has hourly TM backups--what I've noticed since then is that it seems to make a backup immediately when I return to the computer after an absence. It must take just split seconds to do, but the current one has been going on now since I began to write this. ???

Sometimes I wonder--could I even rely on these backups if I had to do a reinstall? oy.

thanks.
