You guys are more knowledgeable when it comes to this than I am. Comments??

Read the article on how to buy AppleCare that's linked to above. It specifically says 60 days (except in Japan where it's 30). I'm not sure why you'd believe rumor sites rather than Apple's official support document.

I just entered the serial number for the iPhone 7 Plus I purchased directly from Apple on 5 May 2017 and it did not give me the option to purchase AppleCare+

AppleCare+ - iPhone - Apple

"

Purchase AppleCare+ with your new iPhone. Or buy it within 60 days of your iPhone purchase:

  • Online (requires you to verify your serial number and run a remote diagnostic)
  • At an Apple Store (inspection of iPhone and proof of purchase are required)
  • Or call (800) 275-2273 (requires you to run a remote diagnostic and provide proof of purchase)

See AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions for complete product details."

You can read more here: How to buy an AppleCare plan for your device - Apple Support

Chris‘s point is that accidental damage voids the warranty. You cannot buy an extended warranty on a device for which the existing warranty has been voided. The extended warranty is only available to devices still covered by the default one year manufacturers warranty.

I have never heard of any manufacturer allowing an extended warranty on any device that is already damaged and thus already out of warranty.

It's not fraud!

All that's required to be eligible to purchase this insurance plan is to purchase it within 60 days of purchasing the device.

As Apple says on their webiste:

Make sure that your device is eligible

Before you can buy AppleCare+ or an AppleCare Protection Plan, make sure that your device is eligible. Enter the serial number for your device to find out what additional coverage you can buy. Select the type of coverage that you want listed below, then follow the steps to purchase a plan.

This insurance plan covers 2 accidental damages, so you basically loose one coverage after they repair it.

To get an idea of the repair and replacement costs for the Screen

without other damages to the iPhone, see these Support pages:

iPhone Screen Repair & Replacement - Official Apple Support

//support.apple.com/iphone/repair/screen-damage

iPhone Service Pricing - Apple Support

//support.apple.com/iphone/repair/service/pricing

If you so choose to use a third-party 'shopping mall repair source'

that is not among the Apple Authorized Service Providers for iPhone

be aware the unit may or not be welcomed at official repair site later.

Some marginal operations can do cheap swaps of used parts to fix

the Device; or other parts not original or official. This is problematic.

While some can do great work, others may not be so qualified. An

out-of-warranty iOS Device would get a quality repair through Apple.

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

Apple has no way of knowing the device is damaged when you purchase the Apple Care online. As long as you purchase it within 60 days of purchasing the device.

The phone has to pass a diagnostic test when purchasing AppleCare online. People have reported being required to bring the device into an Apple Store to compete the purchase, probably because people like you recommend committing fraud.

That said, the phone has to be examined at a store or pass remote diagnostics. A damaged phone is not eligible for AppleCare+. For the OP, have you had the screen repaired by an authorized Apple service center?

Consider acquiring an impact-resistant case, add water-proof & be ready.

There are 'armored cases' that stay on the iPhone, and can protect in up

to four ways against damages. Expect to pay more for a decent product.

And if you have renter or homeowner insurance, ask about electronics

coverage for damage repairs. Their policy details may yield cost factors.

Other insurance options, as 'inland-marine' were offered by some co's.

The 'applecare' idea is OK if not damaged first; and is not to be confused

with some kind of insurance. ~ They conditionally offer replacement under

the AppleCare plan, usually not a new unit; often a refurbished one.

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
