iPhone alarm is silent randomly

Hi everyone,

Since a few weeks it happens that my alarm clock doesn't come on with sound every time. When I wake up and set it just for checking, it rings again. It happened about 5 times, one time I woke up while it was alerting, but only the screen showed the alarm.

I really depend on this alarm clock but I can not trust it anymore :-( what to do?

My alarm was also going silent after a single alert. Just started doing this after I got a replacement and figured out that it was because "Attention Aware Features" was turned on. When I turned the feature off, alarm started working as normal. I think the feature turns alarm to silent as soon as I move it or it recognizes my face ID.

To turn it off go to Settings-->Face ID and Passcode--> Attention Aware Features = off

Well not that the alarms themselves overlap but if you snooze the first alarm until the second one goes off, that’s when I run into problems. Say, my 745am alarm goes off, I snooze it twice, this means that my 8:00am alarm will not make the sound and only show up as the alarm on screen. Just personal experience! I guess this is a good way to tell me to stop snoozing my alarm! Ha

Has anyone been able to successfully fix this issue and successfully been able to prevent this from happening in the future? For me, all of the suggestions that have been listed only temporarily fix the problem. I will use the same alarm for days and weeks at a time with no issues. Then for no reason, the same alarm that has worked for many many days in a row, will go off as scheduled, but only vibrates, NO SOUND! Again, nothing was done to the settings of the already existing alarm. All I did was click the existing alarm to "on", and for some reason, the sound does not go off.

Calendar reminders were causing this problem for me. My iPhone 7 started doing the same thing around Dec. 2017. The alarm screen would display as if the alarm was sounding (with the option to stop or snooze) but it would be completely silent. This seemed random and I definitely know your frustration. I finally figured out what’s going on with mine. I usually set calendar reminders 2 hours before appointments. I also set my alarm to wake up about 2 hours before I have to be somewhere. If I have my alarm set for 3am and a calendar appointment at 5am with a reminder set for 2 hours before the appointment my alarm will sound for a fraction of a second (literally) then my calendar reminder will ding and the notification will pop up, silencing the alarm. The alarm screen will stay up but there’s no sound whatsoever from that point forward. I now try to be careful about not having calendar reminders set to go off at the same time as my alarm. That seems to have fixed the problem for me. This has to be a bug in the newer software versions of clock or iOS because it was never an issue before about a year ago and my habits with alarms and reminders hasn’t changed. It happened a few minutes ago while I was awake so the problem hasn’t been resolved with software updates. Hope that helps you.

Continuing to snooze an Early alarm, past the start time of a Later alarm, is probably what causes the "silent alarm" problem for me. Thanks Logan, for the suggestion. I think in general, Apple has a problem with multiple alerts and alarms canceling each other out sound-wise. I hope users will let Apple know that the "silent alarm" problem is real. I'll use the link that Lawrence provided to contact them.

I have the same problem. Nothing to do with calendar alerts, nothing to do with phone settings. I have only one alarm set, snooze activated and I don’t use bedtime.

My alarm will randomly just show the alarm screen without any sound - I know it’s not a phone setting because if I catch it and press snooze, 9 minutes later I get the alarm.......with sound.

Apple - this is clearly a problem for many, please fix it.

I had it happen again Friday when I had no calendar reminder set. I did have a 2nd alarm set for a few minutes after the first as a backup because I had to be up in a few hours and I don’t trust that I won’t accidentally hit stop instead of snooze when I’m that exhausted. Luckily I peeked at the nightstand clock early in the morning to see how much longer I had before the alarm. It was already 45 minutes after it should’ve gone off. My phone once again had the alarm screen but was dead silent. It’s possible I slept through the first one and when the second alerted it silenced both. Whatever the cause it nearly made my kids late for school and me late for work. It’s definitely a bug in what should be a pretty straightforward app. I do wish they’d get it resolved. I’ll miss having family share if I end up going back to android.

Ya mine just did it second day running. Late for work again 🙄

Off to buy an alarm clock tonight.....

Thing is my last iPhone (SE) used to do exactly the same. No calendar alerts, no second alarm, ringer not silenced nor turned down. Like I said before if I hit the snooze button, 9 minutes later it sounds with all the bells n whistles.

Almost makes me wanna defect to Samsung. Almost but not quite lol

I had this problem with my old iPhone also- thought it was because it was old (was having several problems). Bought the iPhone 8 Plus & updated it yesterday... 1st alarm I set this morning did same thing. I heard it & hit snooze but never heard again. When I did wake up (late) the screen is on the alarm but NO sound at all. Very frustrating (especially since we pay so much $$$ for these devices). I hope they can get this fixed ASAP. Meanwhile buying a backup alarm today...

Having had the 6 and now the X, it is 100% a random bug that is just absurd.

You can literally set and alarm and test over and over - with completely random results.

Try going to alarm and setting it for 1 min later. With volume completely up, it is loud maybe 50% of time on a good day. It is possible but would need to do more useless research on whether turning phone off and back on, gives you a loud alarm at least on the first attempt. But its a crapshoot after that.

Iphone model and ios version are irrelevant (have had this happen for last 5 yrs, and like a crazy person, I continue to test it thinking I will magically get another result.

Lastly, and perhaps most bizarre, ringer can be quiet, then after a snooze or two, blare at full volume. The fact such an important feature does not work consistently is just another reason to hate this company’s products.

Yet I remain a customer - so shame on me.

I think I figured out the issue. The problem is that the bedtime function also has a wake up alarm. And that alarm seems to override the regular alarm. So if it’s set as silent there, it will override any other alarm that comes on before it or while it’s active. To verify, create an alarm for any time then enable it. Then, enable the bedtime function and set the wake up time to be the same time as the alarm time.

What seems to trigger this issue for me is playing a podcast that hasn't been completely downloaded. When it reaches the end of the file, a notification appears saying it needs to connect to the internet to download the rest. I'm asleep while this is happening, so I know nothing about it until I wake up late again and see the iPad lit up on the stop/snooze screen, but with no audible alarm.

I only use Bedtime, with no other alarms set.

I contacted Apple about this problem, and for a while I was in email discussions with them. I finally told them I would use my $12 alarm clock for any important alerts, because the alarms and alerts do work correctly on the phone about 85 percent of the time. Either this bug is not a priority for them, or they do not have a solution yet. (BTW, I have never used BedTime, and the silent-alarm bug did happen to me again today.)
