I want to know how to send the same message to several people but not have them receive it as a group text.
Go to settings for Messages and turn Group Messaging off. If you send a message to multiple recipients, it will get sent to each recipient individually, not as a group message.

I believe that is not possible. The only way that I know of to accomplish that goal is to text them individually. After sending the first one, Copy/Paste into subsequent texts.
Are you asking about sms texts, iMessages, emails, ...?
