After switching to my Chinese Apple ID on my new Apple TV, the App Store disappeared. I tried to search for apps using the Search app (?) on the home screen and some results came up but clicking them did nothing (i.e. the App Store didn’t open). It seems like there simply isn’t a Chinese App Store for the Apple TV. Would that be right?

Yes. Well, I changed Settings > General > Region to “China”.
I signed out of all accounts except “iTunes and App Store”. When I switch from my Australian account to my Chinese account, all four Apple content apps disappear.

OK. I think I can answer my own question. No. There is no Chinese Apple TV App Store. If you switch to a Chinese Apple ID on an Apple TV, the following apps will disappear: Music, App Store, music iTunes, TV iTunes. This is to comply with Chinese laws.
I couldn’t find any official statement, but I was able to collect some anecdotal evidence.
1. The Apple TV is not on the Apple website if you change the region to China.
2. According to an answer on Quora (unsubstantiated), Apple TV cannot be sold in China due to Chinese laws.
Yes, that is possible. In fact, when I tried to search I couldn't find the Apple TV page for your location. Where did you purchase the device from?
Did u try changing iTunes/App Store location to the region your Apple ID is created in
I bought it at the Apple Shop in Hong Kong (the official shop).
Correct, the Apple TV is not available there and is why I asked where you had purchased it. You would need to use the Apple ID for the location in which you reside.
I'm planning to bring my Apple TV that I bought in Indonesia to China. It is pre installed with my apps. Can I still use the Apple TV there if I do not need to install more apps?
No, those apps are only meant to be used in the location where you originally loaded them
