I had the same problem, and I found that you have to completely log off and delete any references to your account on your Apple TV.

Go to Settings > iTunes Store > Apple IDs > Sign Out

Then go to Settings > iTunes Store > Apple IDs > Your Apple ID (scroll down to the ID you want to use) > trash (scroll right and select the trash can)

Then log on again, entering your Apple ID (and the six digit code if you use TFA).

Hope this works for you.

I am so annoyed with all my apple products anymore. It's such a Shame, they used to be so great. This password thing is just one more annoyance that's pushing me further away from Apple. Why can't I just log in once when I buy the device and that be the end of it? My whole family uses my Apple TV and my password is too complicated for anyone (including myself) to remember.

Thanks for trying to help. Sorry to say it won't let you go any further if you add nothing to the password it says you need it and if you try and continue it states "error loading content", this is displayed in the same grey screen appearing when the password is asked for In the first place. It's very strange as until 6 weeks ago I never had an issue I could play any content immediately the only time a password was needed was when I bought a TV or film.

If you are using two-factor authentication on an older device…

You should be able to append the code to your password and enter that (i.e. if your password is ABC and your code is 123, enter ABC123), however if this doesn't work it may be that you are running out of time using your authentication code and you may want to delay getting your code until the last minute or temporarily disable the 2 step verification/2 factor authentication, although it shouldn’t be necessary.

Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication

The following was posted by another user…

  1. From an iPhone or iPad, go into "Settings" => click on the top bar with your name and "Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store".
  2. While still on iPhone or iPad, tap on "Password & Security", then tap on "Get Verification Code", LEAVE the supplied verification code visible.
  3. Go to the iTunes login on your AppleTV settings and start logging in.
  4. When it asks for your password, enter your password and add the verification code to the end of your password BUT DO NOT HIT SUBMIT YET !!!
  5. Go back to your iPhone/iPad and tap on "OK" on the verification code to make it go away.
  6. Now go back to your AppleTV and submit the password.

I have the same problem...

Do not have two-step enabled. All setting adjusted for it not to ask a password. I have been back-and-forth with Apple Support for about 4 months with no avail. Have sent them around 4 diagnostic files (as extracted with a engineer on the line) - in various formats and sent in various ways - keep getting a message back from them (three weeks later) that the file is corrupt...but still no success... 😟 really disappointing!

I got so tired of typing a password every time I turned on Apple TV. This was made worse by that klutzy keyboardless interface that requires navigating one step at a time through a table of letters to select individually each letter of the password. Sot I told it there was NO password. This helped, but only a little. I must still navigate step-by-step to the password box (which remains empty) and there click OK.
Very silly. Quite irritating...

same thing happened here. We stopped using the apple. The Roku works better anyways. we like watching movies from iTunes, but if I cant get there, whats the point. Have apple tv3, tv4, ipad, phones, etc. Just becomes a cluster. The Roku works.

I suspect this problem is worse that it apple thinks it is since I had a similar login problem getting to post this note that I quit trying on the apple, my wife and I both have engineering degrees and work on computers all day, but logging into appletv failed so much, that we cant agree on whats wrong/how to proceed. So yea, why bother. plenty of other devices working.

As some have stated, on the older Apple TV 3rd gen, when you have 2 factor authentication and you try to sign in, you have to put in the password in and submit before you get your code. If this happens, just write down the code, then go to settings and log out of iTunes on Apple TV, then when you sign in add the code to the end of your password.

The code won’t expire immediately so do this quickly. This appears to have worked for me and it hasn’t asked me to sign in again.

Yep. This process works.

Completely sign out.

Then enter in your account details: Settings > iTunes Account > Apple IDs > Add New AppleID > enter AppleID and submit > enter password and submit > THEN wait for 6digit TFA code, and enter that, and submit.

So the TFA code is entered in a following page after the password, not as a post-fix to the password, as suggested in some previous posts above.

Thanks
