Apple Watch Series 2 Run Distances VERY Inacurate!!!

Good afternoon all, I hope someone can assist as I have a real issue with the GPS distances on my Watch Series 2.

I upgraded from a Series 1 purely to make use of the GPS and use the watch for running...as this would save me wearing my Apple Watch and my GPR Running watch at the same time.

However...the distances it tracks are all over the place!!!

I can go for a run at lunch time at work and do the same 6Km loop every day...yet my watch will say anywhere from 4Km to 6Km and anywhere in between!

MORE ANNOYING is the fact the map it shows me at the end IS ALWAYS CORRECT but the mile markers are just in different places.

*** See images below this text of the SAME route but showing very different distances!!! ***

Its like its using the GPS to plot the route but then using the internal pedometer (badly) to work out how far it was and the pace etc!!! Why is the GPS map correct but the distance can vary by 2Km each day on the same route!!

I have had Apple look at this twice...and I have had a replacement Apple Watch Series 2...so this is on two separate watches now!!!

I have started running in both my Watch Series 2 and my trusty old GPS Running watch to compare route info/distance/pace etc. My GPS watch is spot on every time...yet the Apple Watch is always out. I can run an officially measured half marathon in the Series 2 but at the end it will state a mile or so SHORT! SOOO frustrating.

Ive reset/flattened the watch AND my iPhone 7 Plus 5-6 times now as Apple say that's the way to fix it...this takes me the best part of a day as I have a 256Gb handset to a total flatten and restore takes AGES!

Has anyone had a similar issue and how on earth do we fix it?

Is it true that the watch uses GPS to plot the route but then uses pedometer to track distance?? If so this is shocking and makes the Watch Series 2 pointless for serious runners!!

Just to add it does this in both the Apple Workout app AND in the Nike Running Club app...I am told the Nike app just reads the data from the Apple Workout app as Apple don't give direct GPS access to third party apps so Nike cannot access the GPS and have to get round this by just reading the data from the workout app in the background???

I really need a fix to this as its driving me insane!!!!

Hi

The following steps may help:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Check that your personal information remains accurate:

  • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:

  • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
  • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout and Nike+ Run Club are each set to While Using.
  • If each setting is already enabled:
    • Try briefly turning off Location Services and then turning it back on again.
    • Try briefly changing the setting for Apple Watch Workout and the Nike app to Never and then back to While Using.
  • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

Recalibrate your Apple Watch, including resetting your existing calibration data and starting the process afresh.

Restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch:

I have the same issue. I tried everything possible.

GPS signal issues: running without iphone make distance, time and average data useless, workout maps are absolutely unrealistic. The Apple Watch also does not calculate the average of the elevation .

I tried different applications including Nike + Run on my Nike Apple Watch 2 but it is really bad. Apple needs to fix this problems

This is my last workout recorded without iPhone on Nike + run on a Nike Apple Watch 2!

Clearly the jumps back and forward, the shortcuts in the middle of the park and the triangular routes are not the true path of my workout!

😕😟😮

Hi,

I've tried all of the above...numerous times...and none of it fixes the issue.

This has been going on for 4 months on two different Apple Watch Series 2 as Apple replaced the first one thinking the GPS may have been faulty...however this 2nd watch is just as bad.

The ONLY thing that seems to work is a full and total wipe and reset on BOTH the iPhone and the Watch.

This as mentioned takes me the best part of a day to do as ive so much data on my 256Gb iPhone.

Also for a whole days effort in un-pairing the watch, resetting the watch, resetting the phone, setting the phone back up again (as a new phone not a restore), downloading all my music and icloud photos etc, pairing my watch again as a new watch not a restore...it still only gives an accurate reading for the first couple of runs and then goes all out of sync again!!!

The first 1-2 runs are spot on, I can plot a 10km run on Map My Run and when I go run it with my Apple Watch I get all the way round and it will show a 10km run......but from the 3rd or 4th run onwards the distances are all over the place!

I run 5-6 days a week so its only correct for a couple of days before it all goes belly up!

I spent days, weeks, months trying to get an answer and nothing worked so I gave up and crossed my fingers that a software update would come out for the Watch OS which would fix it but nothing has come out as yet.

I still don't understand why the maps are correct but the distance can be so far out...the GPS has clearly tracked the entire run correctly so if the map/route data is all accurate how can the same route be showing as 4km one day and 6km the next!?!?! The watch is clearly using the motion/pedometer to track distance and only using GPS to plot the map.

It cannot be using GPS to calculate the distance or it would be accurate each time as the map it shows at the end of the run shows exactly where I have been so it has clearly tracked the entire run with the GPS.

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I bought a £600 GPS enabled watch for running...that's just never going to work!!

I am having the exact same issue on my series 2 and it started all of a sudden for no reason. I have been through all the same trouble shooting steps as you with no fix. I have noticed that if You tap the arrow on the average pace of your run in the apple app it shows the first km is way out of whack and the rest are closer.

I am so frustrated. Anything that apple has suggested I have done and now there is no response.

I just went and ran my 10km training route and took 3 devices with me, I had my Nike TomTomGPS Watch, my Apple Watch Series 2 and my iPhone 7 Plus (a big beast to take running!!) I switched off Bluetooth and wifi on my iPhone so that the iPhone and the Apple Watch were not connected and I could therefore track the run indipendently on both devices.

The results speak for themselves:

Distance tracked:

Nike TomTomGPS watch = 10.01km

Apple iPhone 7 Plus = 10.16km

Apple Watch Series 2 = 9.19km

Note: I started the iPhone a good minute and s half before the two watched as I started it at my front door and then messed about putting it in a running pouch and getting it zipped in and comfy...I then walked down my drive until the Nike TomTomGPS Watch picked up the GPS signal, at which point I started the two watches. This might explain why the iPhone has a slightly longer distance due to me starting it earlier and at my door, not up the end of the drive.

To have the Apple Watch nearly a kilometre out is just plain crazy...especially given YET AGAIN that the GPS route it's showing is correct. The Apple Watch clearly does not use GPS for distance/pace/average pace etc...it uses the HIGHLY INACURATE pedometer instead. THIS IS CRAP FOR ANY SEMI SERIOUS RUNNER.

If you look at photo of all 3 you'll see the route displayed on the watch is IDENTICLE to that on the iPhone. I've measured this route on MapMyRun and Google maps etc...it's bang on 10km, i have probably run this route 100 times in the last few years.

This just proves again how utterly crap the Apple Watch is for fitness and runners.

I can't tell you how many times I have wiped everything clean and started fresh thinking it was some software related issue or a calibration problem. The watch worked fine for 3 months and then started to get screwed up.

Try something for me...go to the activity app, workouts, tap on a run and then tap the arrow to the right of average pace. Mine shows the first km as being way too slow (almost double) my average pace and the rest of the km on track. It's like the watch uses your stride for the first km and then GPS after that.

Do you have the same thing?

I would take a screen shot but I just wiped everything clean, losing all my progress unfortunately.

Sigh.

Do you not think I've done that already "deggie"??!!

Apple useless on this issue. Been months and no fix.

Had Apple Watch replaced with brand new one...same crap distances.

I've run plenty of officially measured 10k, 1/2 marathon and marathons.

Watch is ALWAYS way out.

PS as to why I'm posting on here!???...I didn't realise this was your personal forum?? I thought was an open space for everyone to get help and advice from fellow Apple users???

So I think I might have a solution, worked for me anyways.

Turns out I think there was something in my Health app data that was throwing off the accuracy so I started absolutely fresh without signing in to my I cloud.

I restored my phone and set up as new under a completely new Apple ID. Then set up my Watch as new. Now with a completely fresh start the Watch has been bang on. I have since signed in to my old Apple ID for my App Store purchases and so far the Watch is working fine.

We shall see... kind of a pain but shows that something in the previous data saved in my health app was screening it up. I previously restored my phone but signed right into my account which defeated the purpose. Let me know if that helps?

Hi Iudgats.

Yep, this was Apples final resolution. And it DID work...for all of a week. Then was back to its old VERY inaccurate self.

I've now done this TWICE.

Full reset and flatten of both the iPhone and he Watch then start from scratch and set up as new devices, no restore at all...all as new devices.

Watch then works a treat for about 3-4 runs...then bang - ITS TERRIBLE ALL OVER AGAIN.

Has yours worked fine ever since? How long has it been working for after the re programming as new devices as mine never lasts more than a week before it just reverts back to the inaccurate settings.

This is driving me insane...I just want my £600 GPS enabled Watch to accurately tell me how far I have run!!! Is that too much to ask...

Jul 24, 2017 7:46 PM in response to JediYodaUk

I don't think this problem is related to the Apple ID at all. This is related to the algorithm processing the information from the GPS/GLONASS satellites. The fact that the altitude is also not processes it demonstrate how primitive is the algorithm Apple is using on the GPS watch. I have reported the problem to Apple and they said the only solution is to return the watch...... 😮😮😮

Dear All

I have been escalating same issue with apple team since May 17.. in my watch first 8 min of work out will show zero calories burnt and zero distance traveled were as in map it will show compelete course ..now i have shared complete logs with apple post they have installed profile in my watch as well as i phone SE. now they are asking me to wait till next update as apple engineering team is working on it.

this could have been the worst product apple could have made. ideally apple should give compensation to all the users of apple series 2 .
