Safari Adds .zip Extension to NeoOffice Formatted Files

Using Safari, when I attempt to download files in the NeoOffice format (actually the Open Document formats with extensions .odt, .ods, and .odp), a .zip extension is appended to the file name. When opened, the .zip file unzips to a directory containing .xml files. If, however, I rename the downloaded file by simply removing the .zip extension (leaving the .odt, .ods, or .odp extension), the document will open in NeoOffice correctly. This is an unnecessary and annoying behavior that I would like to avoid. How can I configure Safari to download these files properly and leave their native file names intact without having the .zip appended?

You can't and the behavior is proper.
Are you clicking a download link or right clicking and choosing save file?
Safari doesn't have any MIME settings for those file formats and, rather than trying to display a link in a browser window (gibberish), it appends .zip to "force" the file to download.
Browsers can only display a handful of file formats in browser windows. All other file formats must be downloaded and opened with other applications.
A good Web page designer would first compress these downloads to prevent the browser from trying to display them. The Site server must also include proper MIME settings in their .htaccess file.

The behavior is the same, whether I directly click or right click. I do not want to open the file, either with any application or browser; I only want it to be stored in its native state in my designated downloads directory. It does store the file there, but has the .zip extension appended. BTW, I recently switched browsers, moving from Camino to Safari. Camino does not exhibit this behavior and properly downloads the file. If it is a MIME type issue, where can I adjust those settings to get a correct download?
