Apple TV 3 and Homekit with August Lock

Hi,

I have an Apple TV 3 which is setup to always be on. I have setup keychain and iCloud on it, and have added the August Smart lock to Homekit using my iPhone 7. However I am not able to access the lock from Homekit when I am away. Most references that I see relate to ?Apple TV 4, but I also saw this in another post.

If you have an Apple TV (3rd generation)*, you can control your HomeKit accessories in the Home app while you’re away from your home.

Can someone please clarify, can you connect to Homekit supported devices remotely if you have an Apple TV 3 configured? If so why am I not able to access my lock status when away?
