iTunes wont burn 300MB playlist to a 800MB CD ? ? ?

Hi, I have a playlist of Children's stories, all of them have been imported from tapes via Sound Studio and converted from AIFF to MP3. Consequently all 46 tracks only take up 309MB, way less than the 800MB CD-RW I want to burn them to.

However, iTunes tells me that the selected playlist is too big and I'll need extra CDs to fit it all on... why is this and how can I burn my MP3s to 1 CD so my wife can have all the kids' stories in the car all the time.

I have tried unchecking some of the tracks and eventually they would fit on so I know I'm not trying to fit on my whole library by mistake. The disc has been erased and is completely empty.

Confused - Any help gratefully received.

You didn't tell what CD format you're trying to burn.
If you're burning an MP3 or Data CD, iTunes should not whine about using more CDs. 309 MB is 309 MB. Period.

It's a different story when you're trying to burn an Audio CD.
In order to meet the specs. of an Audio CD, iTunes has to convert a music file into the native format of an Audio CD.
That format uses way more space and only allows about 75 - 78 minutes of audio to be burned on an 700 MB CD-R(W).
Look at the bottom of your playlist. If it is more than approx. 78 minutes, you need more discs.

I would not recommend to use CD-RWs for burning Audio CDs. Many CD-players don't like them. Use CD-Rs instead.

Hope this helps.
