Mail content black/distorted after 10.12.6 Sierra update

After installing the macOS Sierra 10.12.6 via the App Store updater, the Mail app message pane is either completely black or half black, half distorted images from Mail attachments.

I'll attach a screen shot. The list of mailboxes on the left and the inbox mail in the center column are fine, but the content in the message itself is unreadable. Double clicking on the individual message produces mixed results. If the email contains only forwarded images, the images appear with no distortion. If there is any text, even opening the individual email does not help. The only thing that does make the email text appear is clicking "reply," "reply all," or "forward." The Mail app works as expected for that message after clicking one of those three options.

Another user, patwherity, asked the ASC about a similar problem following the 10.12.5 update: “Mail headings but no content visible after upgrading to Sierra 10.12.5.” One suggested solution then was to use the full combo updater.

Here's the EtreCheck report for my newly updated (but not improved) system:

EtreCheck version: 3.4.2 (436)

Quick update: The distorted images apparently were not Mail attachments - they were images bleeding over into Mail from an external monitor, including an open email and a page in a Safari tab. It's odd.

The good news, at least for the moment: After quitting Mail and re-starting the app, the problem appears to have resolved. If the weird behavior returns, I'll post again.

Hello there. I didn't mention it earlier because it didn't appear to have any effect, but I did re-set the SMC. Details from Apple here: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support. I always ensure two forms of backup before tinkering with the system. I use SuperDuper and Time Machine; others like Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine.

If that doesn't do the trick after a re-start, you may also try downloading and installing the combo updater for 10.12.6 here: Apple - Support - Downloads.

If the problem persists, you may want to create your own question and follow this suggestion from "Old Toad":

Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Good luck!

I'm having a similar problem. My message field isn't black; it's simply blank. I can mouse ever the title bar and download the attachments, but that's it. I know the information is there because I can access it in both my phone and iPad. Forwarding the message does not reveal the text. Attempting to print the message does not work. Restarting Mail and rebooting the computer also does not help.

Any and all thoughts on this are appreciated.
